Hi everyone,

I am just wondering if anyone is sick of teaching using the idea of centers/workstations? Does anyone else feel like this is a ridiculous manadate if we have a class of 30 kids, most not performing at grade level, and many students with behavior problems? My administation seems to think that there is no place for whole group instruction and that centers should start daily and within the 1st 2 weeks of school. Is this crazy or is this just me?

I would love peoples' opinions on centers and to know does this practice occur everywhere?

I am SO SICK AND TIRED of centers!!!! I work in an urban school district. The students are expected to do well on standardized tests, yet we are not allowed to teach them! They are expected to play at these "centers" for almost an hour each day! I could use the instructional time much more efficiently! It is a disservice to s...See More

suz I love centers! That is when I can differenciate!! I do a three group rotation...8 at centers, 8 with me, and 8 doing work at their desks! I teach 1st grade and it has been smooth sailing for me!!! I assign the children to centers and there is only one child at each center...it keeps the behavior in the room almost perfect!!!

Kim I agree that centers can be annoying. I have to say that if you tech in a place like I do, inner city, we are STUCK with them. Instead of complaining about them, try adn make them work. Think of this time as individual work stations. I have my groups working on skills previously learned. If the student(s) successfully completed the skill already, I...See More
