Hello - did you ever receive a response to your query about questions for An Inconvenient Truth? I also teach gr. 7, and am interested in having thought provoking questions, too. Thanks, Janet
Hello Fellow Educators, Wild Studies is offering a week-long eco-education adventure for educators and their adult friends (18 years or older) on Eleuthera Island in the Bahamas May 29-June 4. No previous outdoor skills are necessary. Just bring a positive attitude and we will teach you the rest. The program is tailored to the group's interest and skill levels, this is not a cookie cutter experience.
Snorkel over coral reefs, learn about tropical ocean ecology, participate in reef and fish monitoring, meander through a 3-level tidal cave, explore your own private beach, see places only the locals know....and earn graduate credit, too!

Hi all, I am a Chicago Public School librarian and this summer I will be visiting Mongolia for a class I am taking through Earth Expeditions.
This project has an art component called the Wild Art Project . Basically they are looking for children's artwork (using bold rich colors) and/ or art supplies.
Some of you might work with kids or a need an "Earth Day" project.... and others of you just know a lot of people, like to be helpful, or know others who would be interested ! :)
I would love to take over any artwork that you might come up with or any art supply donations that you want to give.
Feel free to pass this along to whoever else might like to participate! The more the merrier, and it is seems pretty easy to help!
If at all possible, nature is the theme for any artwork, but kids artwork is usually cute!
(email or post for my address!)
(or if you are in chicago area I could always arrange for it to be picked up!)
Below is the posted info. Thanks! Andrea The Wild Art Project & Art Supplies The Wild Art Project...Due: May 12, 2008
'The Wild Art Project' was designed in 2006 to establish a simple, sustainable program that allows kids and educators to make a difference.
This spring and summer, we will create and collect artwork from children in the U.S. and in Field Expedition countries to create a dialogue -- celebrating children's relationships with nature.
This summer, we will focus on sharing US artwork and delivering art supplies to our international partners. A fun idea is to share some of your students' artwork with children in the country you will be visiting.
Bold, rich colors should be used in the creation of artwork for this project (no colored pencils, graphite pencils, or watercolor paints). Appropriate art supplies include: *crayons (press hard as light shading will not show up well) *markers *paints (not watercolor) *paintbrushes *blank, white drawing/painting paper (donated supplies will remain in-country)
Once we return to the U.S., we will organize and showcase this artwork on our Earth Expeditions website, at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden, as well as other international venues. Some images from last year's course have been transformed into greeting cards that are on sale at the Cincinnati Zoo! Income from sales will enable more educators to participate in Earth Expeditions courses and help our global partners' conservation efforts.
Please Note: * If you have other art materials you feel students would appreciate, feel free to take those as well, including construction paper, pencils, modeling clay, etc.
Teachers.Net has taken the work out of searching for Earth Day lesson plans and activities by gathering the best of its best in the April issue of the Teachers.Net Gazette. (LINK BELOW)
Teachers and school administrators looking for creative, meaningful and easy to implement activities to make Earth Day 2008 educational and enjoyable for their preschool, kindergarten, elementary and upper grade students will find a plethora of ideas in the Featured Lessons and Resources section of the current Teachers.Net Gazette.
From a list of primary grade books and corresponding activities, to rainforest theme activities, to an earth measuring activity and instructions for making paper in the classroom, educators will find enough to fill a lesson plan book with cross-curricular activities incorporating math, science, art, reading, games, skits, poems, and songs.
In addition to Earth Day lesson plans, educators will find transcripts of idea-gathering chats where teachers proudly shared their most successful Earth Day and ecology classroom activities. Transcript titles include Earth Day Activities; Going Buggy! An Insect Theme Activities; April Theme Activities; Earth/Eco Books Annotated List; recycling Activities; Teaching Map Skills, and more.
I started this project last week, and some of the balloons are starting to deflate after only two layers. One of them actually burst while the student was putting the wet newspaper on, and it was ruined (I suppose the wet pieces on the hardened dry ones just made it cave in). If these dry after two layers, would it be ok to just paint it with the two layers? Anyone with experience in this?
I love paper mache, and I do a lot of this with my private art students. First of all, it pays to buy strong balloons. I know that's not too helpful now, but a good thing to remember for next time. Instead of buying the cheaper balloons in a package, buy them singly at a party store.
When I have work deflate, I carefully remove the first balloon, insert a new one, and blow it up to the necessary size and tie a knot. Continue adding layers, and no, two layers will not be strong enough. As a matter of fact, if you stop with two layers, the shape will probably deflate when you remove the balloon.

Instead of balloons, I've used the cheap punch balls from dollar stores.
My kids are eco-warriors and just got interested in this competition with DoSomething and BKFK to design advertising campaigns for social issues. Does anyone know anything about these companies? Thanks.
My daughter is one of the national spokesteens for BKFK and they are an amazing company. Everything they do is for and about the kid first. They never charge for their services. They do not try to get you to buy anything or send you any spam. They are funded primarily through grants. And, they really are interested in filling the gap in creative programming in education that has been swept somewhat to the side in this day and age of high stakes testing. My daughter has been associated with the company for four years, and became a spokesperson last year. Every interaction has been wonderful, and you can feel very safe with your child entering any of the competitions. :) Jan
