Our school won't allow classroom pets or pets of any kind to visit school. THIS IS SO SAD... what is the world coming to? Have you thought about using stuffed classroom pets? I'd enjoy some chats about it...

That is, if there are hummers in your area and you have a window.
Caring for the feeder is as easy as swishing it with bleach every week or two (RINSE METICULOUSLY!), putting in more sugar water (1 part sugar, 5 parts water), and hanging it back up.
Hummingbirds are gorgeous, of course, and your students will love watching them. Pay a little extra for the feeders with the rings around the bottom so they can perch while they feed; they'll hang around much longer than if they can stop and rest instead of just hovering. The feeders are much less trouble than the seed/suet restaurants for larger (and poopier) birds. Less expensive, no shells all over the ground, no rodents, and no splatting on the car windows of infuriated co-workers!
Also, in some regions this is GREAT time of year to put out hummingbird feeders, simply because a lot of people bring their feeders in for the winter. That's bad, bad news for any lot of hummers who get acclimated to the feeders in the spring and summer and decide it's safe to nest in the area. If there are hummingbirds where you live right now, they WILL find your feeder!
My new husband is allergic to our cats. He thought he could suffer it out for me, but it's just not working. So, they need new homes :-( If you are in the LA area and are interested. I can deliver one or both of them to you. Here are links to thier pictures.
I just bought four little bettas a few weeks ago. I have three males and one tini female. I left for a 5 day cruise and when I came back I had noticed that my loved one didn't take good care of my fishies. He over fed them and never cleaned the tank like i asked him to. I arrived late night and didn't notice til this morning that One of my males had past away. I quickly cleaned the tank and the noticed that one of the other males is losing its color, swims very slowly and kind of leans on its side. I have no idea how to help him get better. Can any one help me??
They should NOT be in the same tank. They will fight to death. That may have happened already, or it most definitely will. Furthermore, even having a female in the tank with the male is bad-- you may end up with 300 little baby bettas!
I would separate them, adding 1/2 teaspoon aquarium salt per gallon of water (and dechlorinator as instructed). The salt may heal any minor bacterial infection. The one who seems ill may need some antibiotics. Maracyn 2 is a good one that petco and petsmart sell. Let me know if you need smaller dosages (the instructions don't have them broken down too much).

Can any one help me?? First of all I didn't thinks you can put Beta's together in the same tank ,they fight to the death by locking jaws ,SO the story goes,The water has to be VERY clean for them not to get infections ,Dropsy"Gill disease and so forth ,Mind is recovering from ,I think {gill disease} but he also has swollen tummy which has since gone down a bit ,I fed him some Frozen pea's "just the inside part" and seems to be making recovery,we will watch and inform ,Keep a close eye on them and all you can do in keep the water very clean and a ph of 7.o ,good luck ,Rich.
That should work..I mix mine with guppies and they do fine. but eventually when the toads get hungry they eat the guppies.. So if you dont want your goldfish getting chewed up get some slighly smaller than the toads.

Actually firebelly toads are more like frogs and prefer alot of water...get a filter and its easy to mix them

Try the pea trick-- feed him baby food peas on a toothpick. My bettas love it and now, never become constipated.

I have two Bettas in separate bowls. I live in the NE and we're keeping the house cooler now and the water temperature is now around 66 degrees, way too cold for Bettas as I understand. My question is:
Can I put the Bettas in a 5 gallon tank with a divider and use an aquarium water heater without adversely affecting the fish? Can I also use a water filter? I currently have them in about 1 gallon bowls. Do Bettas prefer small bowls compared to being in a 5 gal tank? I must get the water temperature up soon - they are sluggish and not eating as much.
Thank you very much for your informative response. Your comment about the two Bettas in one tank is interesting - the two I have will do this if the bowls are too close so I'll have to watch them if I do put them in one tank. I'm also concerned about one getting sick from the other - another factor to consider that I previously haven't. I'll get the Hagen filter you referred to but I must get the water heated whether it's one tank of seperates that I keep them in. I'll heed your caution and watch for sticking heaters!
Again, thank you very much - you've been a tremendous help. If you don't mind you will probably receive more questions from me as I upgrade my tank(s).
Regards, Carlton

Great! I'm glad to be of help. I've had lots of experience in my short-lived betta world of 2 years! Be careful on the transfer that you put them in water that's the same temp as the bowl to begin with-- a 2 degree increase per day is what I have read will cause the least stress (and ultimately keep them healthy). I would add the water from their bowls, too-- as they have some good bacteria built up in them already. Maybe even use some of the gravel, too, if you have some in the bowls. I have found the easiest and least stressful move may be made with a zip-lock baggie-- if you can get it in the bowl's top (not sure how large the opening to fit your hands). I use food prep gloves (the vinal stuff-- disposable), which may be overboard, but at least use clean, soap free hands! The zip lock is rigid enough at the opening to prop open and lure the fish in with your other hand, which again, may be difficult with a small bowl-- a cup may be easier. BUT do the switch gradually-- when he enters the new tank- be sure to gradually add some water to the baggie (or cup) and take time for him to readjust. It sounds crazy, but I have had bettas break their slime coat down with stress from a transfer that they swam around crazily for days with parasite meds until they finally got rid of them! Let me know if you have any other ??s!
I'll gladly help!

But what I also dont get is that when he sees a female betta he flares at her and she flares back. what does that mean?
