As the world remembers the fifth anniversary of 9/11 let us ask our students to reflect on their heroes. There were so many who gave their lives and so many who saved lives that day. Let us honor them by asking our students to name their hero and their reasons for their choice.
Students will have an opportunity to reflect and share their feelings about their heroes and to publish their thoughts through poetry, writings and/or pictures in honor of the 5th anniversary of 9/ 11.
Hi, I'm not sure if this is an appropriate place to post this, but I am attempting to do a bulletin board for classroom duties that I found online called "Pitch In and Help". It involves have baseball gloves that designate the classroom duties and individual baseballs with the childrens' names on them. Does anyone know where I might find baseball decorations such as these? I have not found any at the Learning Shop (teacher's store) and cannot seem to find any that I like online. I am a huge baseball fan and this is the perfect board for me, but my artistic skills are terrible! I need help! Thanks :)
I am looking for teachers who would be willing to help fifth grade students collect surveys from all Fifty states. In the past we did not have much luck getting our surveys returned. Please email me if you are interested in helping out a fifth grade class!

The math matrices are a series of online tables of electronic and technology resources supporting California middle school math content standards for grades 6, 7 and Algebra 1. The resources align to the two California state-adopted middle school textbook series of McDougall-Littell and Prentice Hall. The Grade 6 matrix also aligns to Harcourt and Scott Foresman.
A Valentine's Day/ 100th Day Postcard Exchange I participated in an exchange like this a few years back. Here's the idea: each classroom mails 100 postcards or valentines to 100 classrooms. They are mailed in January or the first week in February so that all arrive by February 14th which is around the 100th day of school for those who start in September. The valentines could be made or purchased or a picture postcard could be used. When I participated 1 classroom from Africa sent an email valentine because the cost for overseas mail was so expensive. If you are interested please e-mail me your name, school address, grade level and the e-mail address you want others on the list to use. If anyone has an ideas or suggestions, I welcome them! I figure any grade level, anywhere in the world could participate! When I participated some schools just sent greetings while others included geographic or class information.
I love everyone's idea about exchanging postcards with other states. As I teach 4th grade in Topeka, Kansas (state capital) and this year's curriculum stresses learning about the various states, this would be a nice perk that the students would love. As I understand it, we would send postcards to your class from our city and the favor would be reciprocated. I have a class of about 14 students. We have already started school but won't be starting the study of regions for another few weeks, starting with the Northeast. Please let me know if you would like to do this project with me -- I don't mind what grade level you teach or which city you live in -- I just would like one contact from each of the 49 states (excluding Kansas, of course.) Let me know!
Has anyone ever done a year long scrapbook project? I teach 5th grade and I thought about doing this so they will have their elementary school days in an album. I would have them interview relatives and write about several different things, but I was wondering what else to include. I would love any insight on this project. Thanks-

I am going to try it this year. i picked up a book by Carson Delossa called Scrapbooking Student Writing. I am going to put short writing pieces and poems in it. I might also have them do a little summary sheet about activities from the month.
I am a technology intregration specialist for an elementary school with grades 4-6. Last year I teamed up with a fifth grade learning support teacher to turn each of the students' writing pieces into a scrapbook. This year the students are all in 6th grade and we are continuing to build on our ideas.
The students were always reluctant to write. When we started the scrapbooking idea and including technology into it, they really got engaged in their writing. By the end of last school year the students had a scrapbook full of writing pieces that they shared with their classmates.
The topics we covered included the required pieces in the curriculum: descriptive, personal narrative, letter, etc. We also did some free writing, poetry, and a descriptive piece on a person who is close to them. Additionally, we had them create a craft, then take a digital picture of it. They had to describe in detail their finished product. Then we included the picture on the page.
Some of the technology we used included Inspiration for brainstorming, word processing (of course!), digital photography, and the Internet. This year we would like to also incorportate power point by printing copies of slides the students create.
There's a great free scrapbooking software that you can download from the Internet that our director of technology found for us that we would like to try also. However, our printers only print 8.5x11 paper and the scrapbooks are 12x12. Any suggestions?
We'd love to hear ideas from other people and what you might be doing with writing scrapbooks!
