San Diego (December 14, 2005) - Sally Ride Science™ announced today that the TOYchallenge™ sign up deadline has been extended to January 6, 2006. Toys are a great way to learn about science, engineering and the design process. Sally Ride Science is giving students in grades five through eight the chance to step out of their classrooms and develop their engineering and design skills by creating their dream toy for the fourth annual TOYchallenge.
The mission of this fun-fueled toy- and game-design competition is to motivate kids, especially girls, to get involved in engineering design and recognize that there's engineering in everything.
“TOYchallenge provides kids with a really fun way to explore the principles of science and engineering, they’ll also learn valuable lessons in problem solving and team work along the way,” said Sally Ride, founder of Sally Ride Science. “It is a great tool for keeping middle school-age children, especially girls, in the ‘technical pipeline.’”
TOYchallenge 2006 launched on September 12, 2005. Creative kids can easily join in the fun. The competition is open to fifth through eighth graders in the U.S., its territories, or possessions, and Canada during the Fall 2005/Spring 2006 school year. Team size can range from three to six members, half of which must be girls. To get started, teams must: find an adult coach (18 years of age, or older) and sign up by January 6 (fee is $45 per team); then choose from themed-toy categories like “Games for the Family” or “Get out and Play” and start brainstorming.
Further TOYchallenge information is available at [link removed].
Last year’s grand prizes included trips to Space Camp® and the creation of personalized Hasbro figures in each team member’s likeness. There will also be awards in each category, and special awards for design, most educational, engineering, originality and team spirit.

If any angels want to help a mother and son make a move toward a doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine at Bastyr University, we would greatly appreciate it. Relocating in Seattle from Oregon won't be easy on my 6 year old and I, but being a healer and called to help others compells us north. Thank you for a lifetime. Amy and Harper

Atten: Teachers- A great English assignment or Art Project for kids of all ages. We have several support projects going and need assistance from America's Kids.
Our first project is for US Marine Recruits in boot camp. We have been asked to provide more kid support to them. Messages and pictures are scanned and shown to recruits in power points and kids messages are handed out to them. They are very well received and appreciated. We need as many as we can get year around. Valentines day is coming up and a hard holiday on many of them. Themes include America, Patriotic, Thank you, Hang tough, USMC, We love the Military, etc. Please no violent looking creations. Kids are encouraged to ask questions and send support. You may address the letters to A US Marine Recruit. Store bought valentines/cards are ok too. Homemade cards are best. You may use kids first names only and age and stamp each with school address if you would like to hear back. Send creations (send in bulk and not individually) to: Homefront Headquarters Po Box 307 Bryn Mawr CA 92318. (please no glitter projects for recruits)
Get well cards- We send these to deployed hospitals and ones here in the states. Get well recruit cards also needed.
We also need support for Navy sailors, Soldiers deployed around the world.
Homefront Headquarters seeks year around assistance from the Kids of America. Deadline: Valentines Feb 7. All others no deadline. We accept year around.
I am organizing a Valentine's exchange that I know will be lots of fun for students! Last years exchange was such as bi hit that I decided to try again.
After reading the guidelines below if you are interested please email me as soon as possible (final deadline will be January 27th- I will email everyone the list of participants and their mailing address). All ages, grades, states and abilities are welcomed. Please read the guidelines below :
1. Make sure you send a card to EACH classroom on the list. 2. The cards may be made by your class or ones you purchase. I planning on letting each child in my class design 5 cards any way they want so each of you will be getting a unique card. 3. You may include a class picture or information about your class or state if you wish (this is optional) 4. You may begin sending your cards as soon as they are ready. Try to mail the 1st set ASAP so we can begin receiving them. Please make sure you mail all your cards by FEBRUARY 4th to give them time to arrive by Valentine's day. If we have any overseas please mail these a little earlier. 5. Start with the class under your name so everyone begins to receive cards at the same time and the last person on the list doesn't have to wait forever to get their cards 6. Another exchange I participated in suggested you cut apart the actually list and glue the names on the envelopes. This worked great for keeping up with who you have sent to and saved a lot of time
If you are interested in joining please email me with your name, school name and complete mailing address and your email address. If you have any questions/concerns/comments please email me and let me know [email removed])

I have a fifth grade class of 26 students in Florida that would benefit greatly from pen pals. I am a new teacher this year looking for some interesting and motivating activities for my students. Interested?
I'm looking for ideas to go along with the Olympics. I don't have time for a whole unit but would like to incorporate a few things in. I've thought about graphing the medals the USA won.

Olympics, I could help you! I live in Denver, just North of the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. I'm having my kids do an ABC order of all the different events of both the summer and winter games. We're also reading about the importance of the Olympic oath, coming up with our own events, charting the medals won by the varioius countries, charting and graphing the events and more! E-mail me and I'd be glad to help with more ideas! Looking forward to hearing from you!
My name is Natalie. I am a single mother of two (13&15) and I am disabled... Very low income. I need information on how to apply for grants for personal and medical expenses and I would also like to go back to school and start a small home based business. The only information I can find on the internet is about companies that want you to purchase their CD. I can't afford these CD's... Please, Any information of FREE grant info will be greatly appreciated.
Natalie- there are many resources on the Web and at the Library for single mothers to help you afford school and become a success. It is also very possible to start an at home business. If you need a website, we may be able to help you. Try a search on the web for "single mother grants" and start applying for grants. You'd likely be amazed at the results you'd get. Good luck!

I am interested in becoming a special needs teacher. I have wanted to teach pretty much all of my life, but have never moved forwaard with it. I have an associates degree in electronic technology and realize that I need to complete my bachelor's as a first step. The difficult part is that I do a lot of traveling and can't find an online course that will work for me. I spend a lot of time in South Florida and would like to volunteer initially at a school. If anyone has any information or other resources that I can tap into, please let me know.
