Hey there, You guys will think I'm nuts for considering leaving my teaching job in Hawaii, but I have a phone interview on Monday for a high school art position in cottonwood, AZ. My question for AZ teachers is: how safe are art positions in your state (how long til tenure?), how likely is it that I will earn 40,000+ (5 years experience and a masters, plus highly qualified), and what is school culture like in that area? Any help before Monday is so appreciated! Thanks, LWG.

Tom If I wasn't retiring with a NYC pension in a couple of years and moving down to Az then, I wouldn't go into teaching there. If you have a decent pension coming in, then you can take an entry level teaching job and have fun, not worrying about tenure, as I plan to do. But if you are not in that category, you're better off doing something else.

I'm amazed you got an interview.. We are laying off teachers; it's worse here than other places. The jobs that exist go to laid off teachers with the most experience.. not out of state teachers. This is especially true in art; in my program fully half the stundents were in art, and most high schools only need one teacher. It doesn't make sense anyone is even interviewing you. There...See More
