Student Teacher Questions about Sonoran Science Academy

I am a student teacher and this would be my first year teaching full time on my own. I had interviewed wuth Sonoran Science Academy for the positon on the airforce base. Something really did not seem right in the interview, so I started to do some research on this. Can anyone give me some feed back and give me your thoughts? Is this really a safe place to wrok? If I do take the position and it doesn't work out would working for them count against me when applying for other schools?

Sharon I don't know about the base location, but I know they have 1 or 2 other locations in Tucson. I have a good friend who has 2 daughters attending, and they love it. It is very rigorous and challenging. She has nothing but good things to say about them. I'm not sure what you mean about 'safe"--but they seem to have a good reputation here in Tucson. Sh...See More

Hi Student Teacher; my daughters went to the school Phoenix, not really cracked up to what it was marketed as. Some strange stuff here: Majority of Teachers and principal are from Turkey (mostly men) very difficult to understand. They were teaching ethnic studies, Turkish language, song and dance. My kids and I all went to Turkey for my daughters to perform. The school places a lot of emphasis on the Turkish Olympiads we have one in AZ. I am from Central America and felt that Spanish was frowned upon by these hard to understand teachers. Mucho dinero into marketing, claims of high standards, awards, waiting lists, trips to Turkey with local politicians and media, but equipment and textbooks were outdated. When I went to meetings it was always about "how to raise more money" yet they get a reimbursement from the state on a per child basis. Call me crazy but where is the money going for all the HB-1 Visas to bring more uncredentialed teachers from Turkey or for free trips to the media to promote the school and Turkey? What would concern me if I was working here, is the American teachers seem to have a high turnover. Not sure what the issue is cannot put my finger on it. But we have moved and will be back at public traditional school in Tempe. What do you have to lose, hey it's a teaching job with so many teachers getting pink slips I would jump at it with eyes wide open. I did find this web site when I did a search on this school, seems they are part of a chain that manages charter schools. My girls did have a nice time and made good friends. But in the end not convinced the education was better. [link removed]
