AZ is a dead stick in teacher jobs

Masters Degree, 41 years odl w/5 years in the classroom. Spent all day searching want ads and websites for teachers here in AZ, it is a dead stick here for teachers - I cannot believe it will be my second year out of the classroom. I am glad our leader is giving $$ to save jobs instead of CREATING THEM - Thanks for all the hope and change you piece of garbage! Where are alll the other teachers who are out of work - I would love to hear your stories! I feel so lost as i see lack of teacher jobs and realize will not be in the classroom for another year. Arizona is death for education. Cannot even get a subbing job - no criminal record or anything negative but this market. Feel like I want to cry but I must be strong for my family.

dm So sad - I understand your frustration. May I ask what area do you live in? Sadly, many other states are going through this as well - many CA teachers coming here too because of the same reason there, but as the old depression sign said "Keep moving - we can't take care of our own!"

Since I assume you mean Obama by "our leader," you may be aware that the money that may help save some teaching jobs was held up by Republicans, not Democrats. A...See More

I was dedicated and made teaching the center of my life. That was the biggest mistake as I now put my significant other, father, sibblings, and God first. Getting the ax has been an important learning lesson for me and many positives have come out of a bad experience. I don't miss some of the administrators who went through the motions of getting a paycheck and all the paperwork that I had to do. Also, I don't miss going right to bed when I got home and having a job that consumed most if not all of my life. You need to understand that you are more than just a job, and search for other jobs until the economy improves. I went through all the stages of being laid off, and I'm now at peace ready to go onto the next stage of my life. I am 50. I now eat well, exercise daily, go to church, and I'm hopeful that I will find employment. Yes, I am willing to make $10 an hour. The old saying that it's not what happens to you in life, but how you react to those things holds true. Last, keep in mind that Arizona is one of the worst states to be a teacher. I saw many times during my tenue that make this statement true. Look around in other states if you still have the passion to teach, and keep in mind that getting the boot may very well be the best thing that happens to you. I have friends and family members that have serious illnesses and that is life changing!!!!

I Feel Your Pain I was RIF'd for the 2nd time the year before last but did manage to get a new position in a different district by attending the AZ Teach In (10 years' experience in education with a Masters in School Counseling). Hope riffing doesn't continue, but now that tenure is a thing of the past who knows?
