I don't know about the rest of you, but I have had it with working in education, especially here in FL. Thankfully, I am at the point that I can retire, but I feel for the young people that I leave behind. The state of Florida could not have done a better job of setting up educators to FAIL this year, than if they did it deliberately. The new AIR testing has many of us very concerned as to how well our students will do on it. The FSA writing test is so very different than what our kids are used to doing, but we struggle along, hoping that somehow citing texts and making counter-claims will sink in. I know the math teachers at my school are freaking out about the FSA for middle school math. To top it all off, our school district (Polk)has not made smart decisions this year, either. Since our district's file servers were decrepit and ready to die, the board decided to buy a line of pure manure from a major software company and have our network completely connected to their 'cloud.' Their 'cloud' must be connected to a thunderstorm because it freezes our computers, won't connect you to the internet OR intranet most of the time, gives a wide variety of error messages constantly, and even turns your Power point presentations into a one-slide show because it freezes the presentation. To say that our teachers are frustrated is an understatement. To make matters worse, our district administration does not want ANY student to fail or get even a D average! Teachers now have to create work packets for lazy ne'er-do-wells who had 9 weeks to get a passing grade, but decided not to. If the kid only does a small fraction of the work in the packet, we've been 'encouraged' to turn a blind eye to it, and automatically give them a "C" average. The other name for this is "Let's screw the students who work hard to get better than average grades, and let's punish teachers for honestly grading the dregs." This has been the 'last straw' for me. In June, I will complete 41 years in a career I USED to love. BTW, someone told me that this 'grade recovery' BS is STATE LAW! Is this true?!
I agree with common core being govt led. I disagree with money doesn't buy a good education. That's why I don't think education for profit is a good idea.

Hello, I am just graduating from a university in Ontario with an HBASc/BEd. I would like to re-locate to Florida (preferably the Keys area). Any advice on the easiest way to do this?
I'm being general here....what is the elementary teaching job market like in this area? Lots of openings or few, etc.? Currently teach in AZ and I always hear how horrible it is to teach here (haven't taught in any other state) but at least openings are not hard to find....thanks!
I "taught" (read: was a data entry/bill collector) a semester course. On more than one occasion, students I reported to Academic Integrity for cheating were simply moved to another class, There, they were able to complete the course and earn FLVS its $.
Don't even get me started on my IL. Hands-down the worst human being I've ever known, but was the darling of FLVS and has since been promoted. This person even stooped as low as to retroactively change records of my monthly walk-throughs in order to get me on the summer firing list. I have the proof--s/he thought was s/he sneaky, but s/he really wasn't/isn't that smart...though, I didn't notice until I was going through files and getting ready to send back my computer.
I haven't pursued anything with it because I ended up with a good job and was just happy to be done with FLVS. When I was let go, I was actually just getting ready to let FLVS know I wouldn't be coming back and was just going to finish up my contract. I'm only upset that they beat me to the punch and messed up my perfect record.
I really hope anyone who reads anything pro-FLVS realizes that they have shills who write positive reviews and posts for them. I actually chose to believe those online reviews when I was trying to make the decision whether or not to accept the position at FLVS. I ignored all the negative ones that I thought were just too crazy to possibly be true. Spoiler alert: if anything, those reviews underestimated how terrible things are at FLVS.
If you read all the positive reviews, you can easily see how many of them were either written by the same person or someone in HR who was given guidelines on what to include. They all read like HR copy.
I still can't believe there hasn't been some kind of expose done on FLVS.
If you have integrity: avoid FLVS at all costs. Spread the word!!!!

Lee County is on the Gulf coast, south of Tampa and we always seem to have some openings somewhere. A lot of prospective teachers will sub or take open ends (maternity or sick leave) and they seem to get hired because then the admin gets to know them.
FL certifies special ed K-12, not K-9, so I don't know if that transfers. From what I understand they are lenient when taking out of state certifications in the high need subjects, so you may be OK there. We do have a middle level (5-9) certification in Math and English, and of course there is an elementary certification.
Apply for your license. If you get the Florida special ed and/or middle math endorsement, you will probably get a job since you are flexible on location. Good luck!

Many districts have a hand-full of YRS. Many times they are alternative or academy-type schools. I'm not familiar with any district that has it implemented wide-spread.
