I haven't posted to this website in quite some time. I don't know about the rest of you, but I have had it with working in education, especially here in FL. Thankfully, I am at the point that I can retire, but I feel for the young people that I leave behind. The state of Florida could not have done a better job of setting up educators to FAIL this...See More

Scooby Thanks for your response, 'Neighbor to the north.' Between the politicians who make promises on our backs, and students who don't care about their education, the next ten weeks of school won't move fast enough for me. The future of our nation is worrisome, to say the least. -Scooby

In the sage words of Yogi Berra, “if you don’t know where you’re going, you’ll be lost when you get there.”

Picking a career path is a game of reality versus passion, and your students can start blazing a meaningful path in school.
Hello, I am just graduating from a university in Ontario with an HBASc/BEd. I would like to re-locate to Florida (preferably the Keys area). Any advice on the easiest way to do this?
I'm being general here....what is the elementary teaching job market like in this area? Lots of openings or few, etc.? Currently teach in AZ and I always hear how horrible it is to teach here (haven't taught in any other state) but at least openings are not hard to find....thanks!

I just want to say that I am a long time teacher at Flvs who is stuck due to family members medical conditions. If you are a teacher considering coming here please reconsider as this school has turned into a "it is all about the money" place to work. You will be available to students 8am to 8pm 7 days a week, you will have bosses who lead through f...See More
pink scissors So. Very. True. FLVS is pure evil. I am so, so, SO very thankful that I'm no longer there.

I "taught" (read: was a data entry/bill collector) a semester course. On more than one occasion, students I reported to Academic Integrity for cheating were simply moved to another class, There, they were able to complete the course and earn FLVS it...See More

I am currently a special education teacher in Michigan, and I am contemplating moving to Florida. I have been teaching for 12 years in Michigan, and each year since starting teaching, I have made less and less money. We are continually taking pay cuts and/or wage freezes. I have family living near the Sarasota area, and I am wondering how the teach...See More

kt I wish that I had known that, but I also moved here to be closer to family. Also pay attention to the county in Florida. Some pay significantly less than others, but don´t tell you until after you start teaching. They do not pay you for experience!

I am considering relocating to Florida and was told there is a teacher shortage in Orange County and basically Southern Florida. Is this true and would it be easy to get placed at a school in Orange County. Also, is it a decent area to teach - please don't say pay because as an alternative teacher in Illinois I earned 23,000 anything is better than...See More

Mark I would say that your first step is to apply for a Florida license. You're much more likely to get hired from out of state with a Florida license in your pocket. Plus, you will know exactly what you're qualified to teach in Florida.

FL certifies special ed K-12, not K-9, so I don't know if that transfers. From what I understand they are l...See More

I forgot to ask - are there any year round schools in Florida?

Many districts have a hand-full of YRS. Many times they are alternative or academy-type schools. I'm not familiar with any district that has it implemented wide-spread.

Are you required to send your FTCE score reports to your school district or do they get them automatically?
