Just curious to find out what amounts other counties are getting. Lee county is getting $1700. Please email back with your county & your amount. Thanks!
The Collier County School Board voted this week to give all teachers a 7.25% raise, retroactive to July. At last, the union stepped up to the plate to make this happen.
The Rick Scott "raise" is really a bonus. There is no guarantee that the funds will be renewed next year, so any money you receive this year may be go away next year. You can read my blog post about this at kafkateach.wordpress.com.

Also, for many districts, it never was $3500. That was a figure that Scott threw out but didn't have the authority to do that.
After the Legislature attached all the strings, such as money for admin & charter schools, not a lot was left. Oh, the funds were determined by FTE counts & not a flat amount
Besides apply, what can I do to get a teaching job in one of these counties? I have applied, I have 'bid' on open positions. I cannot get an interview. Any suggestions?
All the counties you mentioned (I'm a 3rd grade teacher in Okaloosa) are awesome places to live, have teacher education programs nearby, and have military spouses rotating in and out who are great teacher candidates. You need to get a foot in the door and subbing, especially long term sub positions is a great way to do it. Got me in!
I received my SoE last year around this time. I currently live in TN and was planning on moving to Hillsborough county last year. What I did was of course put in applications for the counties that you are thinking about. I'm sure you have done that though. For some schools, like smaller ones and charter schools, they gave me interviews via Skype. Not sure if you are a new teacher or not, but maybe creating an online portfolio would be a great idea. That is the main way I got the schools to even look my way since I didn't live there.
Other than the charter schools, the public ones didn't call me. What you will need to do is plan on going next summer to the Hillsborough County Teacher Fair. I think that is what it was called. That is primarily how they do their hiring in that county. They interview, hire, and process on the spot. (Get there extra early!) It's a long day, but I did get a job offer. Being out of state is good and not so good at these fairs. There was a lot of people who were subs and part year teachers who knew people and schools that got hired. Your best bet are the schools that are primarily low income, not so good neighborhood schools. The ones people don't want to go to. (Sad but true). They had close to 300 open positions when I went last summer. I also planned some interviews with charter schools for when I was down there. Overall, I received 3 job offers in that area, unfortunately I had to turn them down and stay here a little bit longer. Really, none of that area even starts thinking about hiring until May/June. I really hope this helps. Please feel free to contact me to ask anymore questions about this. I would love to help you out. I feel like I spent the entire school year last year researching and planning the move to Tampa. Good luck.

We are hosting a 2-hour Active Shooter Seminar for Teachers on December 7th from 9am-11am in Clearwater. There is no charge for teachers, principles, or security.
Have we gotten to the point where we must be trained so we can accurately shoot our students? In the last 15 days, two "Union" teachers have been killed by students. Could there just be too many guns available?????????
They will teach you that the best place to aim is the head, just like they did to Paul Ciancia the guy at L.A.X. We pay a big price for the second amendment but its a price that Americans are willing to pay,...until one of them gets shot
...See MoreMaking a new thread for the reply because the other FLVS thread is far down the page.
FLVS was pretty much the worst experience of my life. I cannot express to you how happy I am to be back in the traditional classroom.
I would, literally, rather have root canals on all of my teeth than have to spend another day there.
My IL at FLVS was an absolute nightmare. S/he was deceptive, rude and highly unethical, yet remains an FLVS favorite by the higher-ups. S/he would have done ANYTHING to stay golden.
The people in the schoolhouse were afraid of him/her and would never say anything against him/her. Not only that, but the atmosphere in the schoolhouse was also a special brand of toxic. The paranoia, backstabbing and outright lying were out of control. Looking back, their behavior is almost comical.
It wasn't like I was expecting a cakewalk when I signed on. I went to that session where they try to scare you out of the job. I went part-time, spoke to multiple people about their workload and how they organized their day, etc. before I made the decision.
Everything was fine at first.
The problem arose when they started constantly changing expectations and rules while, at the same time, were steadily increasing the workload. It seemed to start after the Staff Conference last year. That's also when all this internal competition and pitting everyone against each other for the prize of being our IL's favorite and/or to stay off his/her infamous "List" really took off in earnest. (And that was long before the education bill passed.)
What had been a tedious yet "doable" job turned into something excruciating and close to impossible.
The reality of FLVS juxtaposed with the myth perpetuated at Staff Conference, meetings, and in the media just boggles the mind.
Post from anon:
"Veritas, I had the SAME experience ("covert" conversations) at all of my (5) Staff Conferences! Thank you for verbalizing that FLVS is TOXIC! It is nearing the end of October 2013 and the "Culture of Fear" (which began when RW & VR became Directors of Education) continues with "Standard Operating Procedures" -- whereby if you do not log your Monthly Calls correctly (and it is expected that you speak to 100% of the parents each and every month) you can be terminated. Let me make this very clear: I love my students, parents, & co-workers and my data says that I'm doing a great job. But the ones "above" me...I could easily do without (& that is putting it kindly)."

I am in kind of the same boat as you, only I am in a different state now (Oregon). I have professional references, but they are old. My last two principals were terrible, but I had other people I could use. It's simply that I don't have any current references.
Oregon is a lot worse for getting teaching jobs than Florida, and it can take years to secure a position thanks to budget cuts, few new positions, and few veteran teachers being able to afford to retire.
The most important thing other than current references is making sure you are now eligible for rehire at the district from which you were let go, assuming you had no other teaching jobs since. Many districts will check old districts to see if that is the case.
I really detest the idea that one person, a principal, can really louse up a teacher's entire career. In no other field is this the case.

The Republican Legislature passed a law under Jeb Bush so that a teacher can be fired at anytime for any reason or no reason. No jobs advertising on site, stipulates..."must be former teacher" I would also consider moving out of Florida...their are very few really good job opportunities and the future does not look good.
