That would be quite bad as most of us are not in social security so we have no other protection against inflation. Plus haven't we been told our pension system is SOLID...so why this rumor???

I didn't hear about that in NJ. My SIL teaches there. That is a BIG hit for them. Inflation is eating us alive now, even with paltry raises if you are lucky enough to get them. I can only imagine how things will be in the future.
My advice would be to immediately take the cash value of your pension if you are eligible soon. Just cash it out and take the lump sum. Most pension funds are horribly under-funded and they are not earning anywhere close to the 8% rates that are required in order to pay out what has been promisedd. Take the money and run, regardless of penalties. There is a good chance it won't be there at ALL in later years.

I called the Ga TRS about the COLA and they said there was nothing being discussed so assume they will be there at least for now. States that have eliminated COLAs (and a few like NJ have) still have to see this go through the courts. It's only started in the lower courts which for the most part have upheld it. BUT it could be very different story when it reaches the state supremes.
And you are right no COLA and no SS is a recipe for disaster. I would hope anyone in the situation (and that would include me) would be have second second plan in place to insure enough inflation protected income.
I don't think most pension plans will allow cash outs. Some do allow you to take out a certain percentage when retiring. But that decision has to be made then and you can't go back and decide later.

Yes, they offer benefits and they're quite good! Besides the typical health, vision, and dental, they also offer adoption assistance and discounted pet insurance, among others. He'll be eligible on September 1st and I think I'll be dropping my insurance at the Technical College where I work. Coverage for both of us through GACA for vision, dental, and health is cheaper than what I pay just for me! It's also a PPO vs the HRA I have currently.
Of the two people I know that work there, salaries range from mid to upper 30Ks. Both the people I know are first year teachers, so I don't know about about pay based on experience. However, I do know there's a slight difference based on whether you have a master's or a bachelor's degree.
From what we've seen/learned so far, it looks like GACA is going to be a great place to work! Many teachers say they'll never go back to a brick and mortar school!

I know our local county here also operates a virtual school and it follows the school calendar (summers off) and you work from home. You have to spend one day a month at the district office, meeting with kids in person.
The virtual school is all about making sure a student finishes the course. Otherwise, you don't get paid. If the student drops your course for any reason, you are in trouble. So you become a switchboard operator, making hundreds of phone calls at all hours, trying to reach these kids and cajole them into finishing their assignments.

I am in desperate need of a job. I am a certified-highly qualified teacher that is out of work. I have over 8 years experience in the special education area. I am wondering if anyone knows of any counties or particular schools that are in need of an interrelated special education teacher. Please respond!
Thanks Guys, I was offered two positions in a day!!! One at a private school and one in APS. I took the interrelated position in APS.The private school was a special ed private school that was only going to pay me $500 a week with no benefits! So, it was a no brainer.

This may seem small to some but to me it is just one more knock that lowers teacher morale. The fridge in the staff lounge stays dirty from lazy people who don't clean up after themselves as does the microwave oven. It's been really nice over the years to be able to keep lunch items and snacks for kids in our classroom fridges. Also, the microwaves were a great time saver in heating up our lunches considering we only get that measly 30 lunch. I'm just pissed.
Anyone else have their systems do this? Any APS teachers on here been told the same thing?

I moved to another school and the papa in my room had hidden a microwave in the closet. I was wondering why people kept coming in and going to the closet! (No one has any microwaves or frigs anymore.)
