I've never posted anything on this site before and would love to get some advice from anyone willing to give it.
My situation is this. Last school year, I had worked for a bigger school district in a non-contracted position as a teacher for the before and after school program in an elementary. I was laid off at the end of the school year due to funding cuts. In addition , I have three years of contracted experience in a small school district in Iowa, 2 years in First and a year as a Lower Elementary teacher in K and 1. I have my BA in Elementary Ed and endorsements in Reading, Language Arts/English and Early Childhood.
I have had several interviews over the Summer for a variety of elementary jobs, but I seem to come in 2nd and not get the job. Principals that I've interviewed with don't really have a lot of feedback for me. They always have good things to say about the interview and what my references have said. Many times, they have said the decision came down to someone else having more experience. It is very hard not to take it personally.
I'm currently on unemployment and signed up for subbing. Recently, I've begun looking for jobs that are not with the district but still working with kids. Does anyone have any advice they can share or ideas for me to land a job? I am feeling pretty frustrated with the fact that it is the beginning of the school year and I can't seem to get my foot in the door anywhere.
Let me know what you think. I really appreciate any thoughts you may have. There really isn't a lot of places to get support and advice for my situation. Thanks!

Muscatine, Louisa-Muscatine, West Liberty, Wilton, Iowa City, D...See MoreHI! I am soon moving to the Muscatine area from Colorado to be closer to my husband's family. I am a teacher and will have to start looking for a job soon in the area. I don't want to travel too far, but was curious about any input/reputation of the following school districts:
Muscatine, Louisa-Muscatine, West Liberty, Wilton, Iowa City, Davenport, Rockridge, IL???
Where would you want to teach? Where would you send your kids? School levies? Reputations? Thanks for any opinions! Thanks so much for your help!
O...See MoreThanks for your thoughts and input Cindy! I am working on trying to get through the paperwork to attain my teaching certifictae in Iowa, which I must admit is a bit more confusing than other states I have worked in.... oh well. I have been teaching fifth grade for several years, but am also certified to teach middle school math as well.

I lived in Muscatine for 4 years while working for an private university's distance learning elementary education program. I became very familiar with schools in the area. I also worked for Lone Tree school for a few years which is about 25 miles west of Muscatine. I had a wonderful experience at Lone Tree and the drive to/from Muscatine is a very easy drive. West Liberty has a large population of ESL students. I have some students who recently student taught there and also current students who are paraeducators there. They enjoyed the school and were very prepared to teach there as they had ESL K-12 endorsements. I had two student teachers at L-M last semester and they were extremely pleased with their experience there. The teachers were very welcoming and helpful to them. Nice administration as well. Iowa City and Davenport are both great districts but very large...not sure what you are used to/want. Muscatine has some wonderful teachers and administrators as well. There are many elementary schools (K-5) which I'm sure you've noticed. I haven't had any experience with Wilton though, but it is a nice small community.

Across America, young people are thinking and talking about equality. From the environmental justice movement to the trial of the Jena 6 – young people continue to come out in force, speaking their minds and making their voices heard on the issues they believe in. The National Campaign to Restore Civil Rights (NCRCR) is interested in hearing what today’s youth have to say about the question, “What does equality mean to you?†To that end, NCRCR seeks your assistance in reaching out to young people to let them know about our exciting essay and visual media contest.
In 1951, thirteen parents filed a class action lawsuit on behalf of their children, calling for their school district in Topeka, Kansas to reverse its policy of racial segregation. This landmark case, Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka (1954), established that "in the field of public education the doctrine of "separate but equal" has no place," making it illegal to segregate students on the basis of race. Brown v. Board was a milestone, helping to lay the groundwork for major victories in court, on the streets, and in the halls of Congress. Within a decade, Congress passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964, banning discrimination in employment practices and public accommodations and soon afterward passed laws restoring and protecting voting rights and prohibiting racial discrimination in housing.
The concept of legal equality - the principle under which each person or group is subject to the same laws – remains a cornerstone of American life. Through legal and legislative battles over race, gender, orientation, the environment, health, education, age, housing, immigration, and disability issues, the struggle for equality continues. NCRCR invites young people between the ages of 14 and 18, to answer the question, “What does equality mean to you?†Participants can enter the contest in one of two ways – by sending an essay of no more than 750 words or submitting a visual media entry, such as an original photograph, drawing, or cartoon. Enclosed with this letter please find the contest guidelines and information on how students can send in their entries. Submissions for this contest are due by Monday, April 12, 2010.
We appreciate your support and assistance in distributing information about this contest to students.
Many thanks,
Naoma Nagahawatte The National Campaign to Restore Civil Rights __
The National Campaign to Restore Civil Rights (NCRCR) is a non-partisan movement working to ensure that our courts protect and preserve equal justice, fairness, and opportunity. We achieve these goals through raising awareness, outreach, and building alliances. Recognizing how little information about the status of civil rights in the courts is reaching people across the country, NCRCR is focusing on public education and outreach, finding ways to get the message out about the impact of court rulings on our neighborhoods, our schools, our opportunities and our rights.
