Need your thoughts- 1. should a teacher who retires this year be rehired for next year at a lower step on the schedule ..pros & cons.. 2. Should a district hire a certified teacher as an associate for hourly wages?
One of my retired friends indicated that she may have to return to teaching for enough money to pay the insurance until she can get social security, but that she would have to wait 4 months. What is the "waiting" period? I thought that was reduced to one month.
There is a limit on teaching income and still collect IPERS. I thought it was $14,000 per year. Another words they could SUB for 140 days at $100 per day. Now, my district doesn't pay $100 yet, but some of the neighboring school districts do. Unless they didn't collect IPERS, then they couldn't be paid at even the beginning teacher's salary. Am I confused?
I don't have any problem with hiring OVER QUALIFIED people for hourly jobs. My dad isn't a teacher, but after he retired, then he went back to work for the same company, but not in the management capicity. It is great for him. He has continued to work almost 15 years past his official retirement. Shorter hours, less stress, but makes enough to pay his insurance. He is past 70. AND THE DOCTORS DON'T OBJECT.
BTW, he isn't working in the same location as before when he was management. I think that is better for everyone involved.

Hey, I know Nevada, Iowa!! I even know how to pronounce it correctly: Nah-VAY-dah. How's THAT??? :) My kid's nursery school teacher lived there. Her name was Judy Henry, and they (she and her hubby, whose name I cannot remember for the life of me) had a HUGE you-pick strawberry patch. Oh, YUM, were those berries ever good!! And 'Miss Judy' was the best! She had her school in Ames, a big old yellow house. My kids still remember her, and it's been 25 years!
Hey, someone knows where I am!!! That's amaising! I know of the Henrys. I think we are on the next generation at the school now. That is one of the things I can't seem to get used to about a small town.
I don't know what it is about these little towns in Iowa, they choose any old way to pronounce their names. Madrid, Nevada...I guess they feel they can do anything since our capital is Des Moines. My family moved here from Illinois. After being corrected so many times about Des Plains it was hard to get into a new pattern.
Anyway, it does prompt some interesting conversation. I almost felt sorry for our chronic mispronouncer of a president. He visited our town last spring and actually announced it correctly. Of course some of the national media did not know this so they made fun of him anyway.
I guess that is part of the joy of living in Iowa...this is a big topic of conversation. Really tells a lot about what else is going on around here:) On 5/05/02, Magoo wrote: > Hey, I know Nevada, Iowa!! I even know how to pronounce it > correctly: Nah-VAY-dah. Hi everybody. Does anybody know which states accepts Iowa teaching certificates? Also, does anybody know which states let you begining teaching right away with a temporary license while you complete their requirements? Just wondering.
Mary, where do you teach in Nebraska? I am in Falls City and was hoping to return to Iowa after this school year. With all of the cuts, it looks like I will have to try again next year.
K, I taught in South Sioux City for two years. I live in Sioux City and now teach in our district. I taught my first year in Homer,NE, about 25 miles away from here. Man, did I hate commuting!

In my school district rumors start to happen this time of year. People start to become defensive and look out for themselves. My counselor came up to me the other day and said that the counselors throught the state of Iowa are coming together to form support for keeping counselors in the schools. She suggested that Iowa Art Teachers do the same. She basically said that if we cannot prove how the National or Iowa Art Standards fit into the State Reading Standards then all programs will be cut........that could be us. What ever happened to Art for Arts Sake????????? Counselors and others are given the time to attend conventions where all can be present because they don't have to hire subs. If we are gone subs have to be hired. We have never been treated with the same professional respect. The art programs are successful and maybe the state needs to try to make the Standards fit into our Art Standards...we are seeing successes and the kids look forward to school because of the arts. Help, please! What do other schools do about preschool tuition? Do you charge a fee? If so, what are the fees and guidelines involved with the fee? How does your fee compare with the local area private and public preschools. Any information will be greatly appreciated.
must meet Title I guidelines. We have been doing it this way for YEARS. Thank goodness. We do have many fine preschools in our community that charge, but I am not up on their pay scales, etc. All are in churches, so I know that makes some difference... no building rental, no utilities, some scholarships for the needy (as it is considered a Mission's project.) Sure hope this helps some...

Our district charges $70.00 a month for the preschool and a private one charges the same.
Many of you may be in the same position that I am - left with a little bit of extra time during the summer and slightly underpaid throughout the year :) . I have found a terrific company that promotes a personal and environmental wellness line while compensating you for using their products and introducing them to others. It is NOT multilevel marketing! The company follows a consumer direct marketing approach while providing customers with safe, nontoxic, environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional household products.
