I am considering coming back to Iowa City this year and I am wondering what the outlook for my wife getting a job in that area is for this next year. Also, I am wondering what you guys think is the real cause for this sudden cutback on spending for education. I don't believe that the budget is really as tight as they claim it is.
Next week we should know how many more teachers we need- the schools do an official head count which allows more teachers to be hired. Make sure she sends a letter of interest and her resume. Our director of human resources is new, so things may not be as smooth as they usually are.
Also- have her try at Mid-Prairie in Cedar Rapids. They are always hiring. Other cities to try: Cedar Rapids, Clear Creek, West Branch, Solon, Lone Tree... these are all within 25 miles of Iowa City. And- there are always subs needed in Iowa City- if she is a good sub, she may get hired next year. Please let me know if you have any questions.

I am just writing in to thank you guys for your responses and to mention that my wife did find a position in the Riverside school district teaching sixth grade. Also, she like one of the other respondents got a call to interview with Iowa City but it was several days after her deadline to take the job in Riverside and was already committed. We both appreciated all of the info though and it did help us to make the decision to come back to Iowa City and we are both glad that we did.
Save receipts on crayons etc and whatever else is bought in the way of classroom supples for children. A recent change allows teachers to subtract up to $250.00 when figuring their adjusted gross income. They will not need to itemize to get this benefit.....must work 900 hours. Details on how to claim are in IRS publication 3991. [link removed]
I have published one book: 7001 RESUMES, it is a job search book and you can find it on the internet in most book sites. I will have two more coming out soon: JUMP START YOUR CAREER, and JUMP START YOUR COMPUTER SKILLS. The "Career" book is for HS grads. and Adults entering the world of work for the first time. And the computer book is for training in the classroom. I have been developing it for over 2 years. They are coming soon. I hope to publish Jump start, this fall, and the computer book in the Spring of 2003.
If you are interested let me know. I have taught 7,001 in Adult Ed. classes as a Career training book.
For information give me a call at 714-996-4221 or 714-515- 6103 or E-mail me.....
The computer book, I believe is better that "Future Kids" and should cost a lot less.
my book 7,001 is now in some colleges, Libraries, HS, and ROP's throughout America.
Thanks,
Gene

Here's a public invitation for application to the IndiVisual/Hewlett-Packard 'Read for Life' scholarship. I feel this is important to share with the public and hopeful you will help the spread the word with teachers and schools administrators about this great scholarship opportunity to help struggling readers.
The 'Read for Life' scholarship consists of a wireless mobile reading lab complete with 5 Hewlett-Packard laptop PCs complete and 3 years unlimited student-use of IndiVisual Reading ($25,000 value). Another plus with this scholarship is the fact that Dr. John Manning, a former president of the International Reading Association, is the author/advisor behind the IndiVisual Reading program. The scholarship is available to any public, private, parochial or charter school within the United States.
My daughter was in it several years ago. I don't remember much about it. I may try and interest my 8th graders in this competition so I am looking into this also. You may try your local AEA office or website for the history AEA coordinator for more info.
