The LBS1 is an add-on to your certificate that allows you to teach special ed at the level of your certificate. So you could only teach at the elementary level (BTW, The Type 10 certificate for those who majored in sped allows you to teach sped at any level.) You do not need to already be in sped to get the LBS1. As far as I know, it's good as long as your certificate is good. Keep working as an aide while you're taking the three required courses (the fourth one is already in your background, Into to Special Ed). Ask the sped teacher if you can observe when he/she works on IEPs so you can learn more about them. At least in my experience, the coursework didn't cover anything about writing a good IEP! Your aide work will also give you valuable daily skills that other candidates might not have. Good luck! It's not as easy now to find a sped job as it was a few years ago, but it's still better than trying to find a job in elementary ed.
