ESL endorsement thru University of Phx online

Has anyone taken the U of Phx online courses for an ESL endorsement? I know U of Phx has been approved on the ISBE site for middle school classes, but not sure if it's approved for all other endorsement courses. Additionally, does anyone know how the 100 clinical hours work when taking the classes online? Does being a sub at CPS for over a year count as clinical hours?

Any University accredited by their regional accreditation body counts. U of P is accredited.

However, I don't know if they have the requisite courses for the specific endorsement you want. You would have to contact U of P or ISBE to find out. Neither may be able to give you a straight answer. I know they work for the LBS I endorsement, but to find out exactly what you need to take, you need to apply for the endorsement and send in the course descriptions to ISBE. They will then approve or disapprove them.

I dunno enough to say with authority. The ISBE web page says 100 clinical hours, OR 3 months teaching experience with ESL students. Now, a special ed teacher I worked with when I was a department chair needed me to write a letter that said that she had experience teaching with ESL students. Now, she had never provided ESL services, and never taught an ESL class. She had ESL-eligible students in her special ed classes, but had nothing to do with teaching ESL. Apparently that was fine for ISBE.

A social studies teacher I co-taught with also added the endorsement. He had, several times in his career, had a number of ESL students included in his class. He had the equivalent of an ESL Resource teacher come in to provide him with resources (actually, she didn't do too much, so he just modified their grading on writing-heavy assignments and gave them simplified reading assignments much like he would do for my special ed students). That counted as far as ISBE was concerned.

This was several years ago. I'm not sure if they've beefed up the requirement, but it's what I know.

I believe the clinical hours requirement is still the same. You'll have to have someone from CPS write a letter stating that you've taught students who qualify for ESL services.

It really isn't a very well regulated requirement. I know 2 administrators and 2 teachers who've recently gotten their ESL endorsements, and none of them had the required experience with ESL students. (I'm assuming there isn't a waiver for administrators... I probably shouldn't assume.) At any rate, if someone is willing to testify to that experience, the ISBE seems to accept it.

It's unfortunate because I think the purpose of the clinical hours is that the teacher can practice the strategies, learn to identify the difficulties, and conduct the research that is a part of the program

The 100 hours are a state requirement, as outlined on the ISBE site under certification requirements, not just a university requirement. However, I do understand that ISBE relies on the provider to insure that endorsement candidates have fulfilled it.

I understand the difficulties of that requirement, but there are options to fulfilling it besides observing in another classroom for 17 days. When I was working on my endorsement, I had a class full of ELLs in kindergarten. Yay for me! My friend who was also in the program had no ESL students. With the approval of our principal, we switched classes for an hour several times a week throughout the program. Another of my friends volunteered in a summer school program to get her hours, while another got her hours through the after-school reading club she taught.

No, it's not a repeat of student teaching, but I found that working with ELLs during my coursework to be valuable to me
