As contentious as it (understandably) is, relocation money & rent assistance was promised. More than halfway through the schoolyear, I still have not rec'd any of it and am wondering how widespread this is. I'm considering looking in to filing a class action lawsuit.
Can't say that I am the least bit surprised by this. Teachers are still waiting to be paid for their Credit Recovery hours from the 06-07 school year. Several of my new colleagues have also expressed that they have yet to see a dime of their recruitment incentives.
The people in the payroll department also leave a lot to be desired in terms of communication and people skills. I still can't get over the fact that the payroll people think teachers are stupid for expecting pay for stipends, incentives and additional duties in a timely manner. My guess is that the RSD has not received the federal monies that were allocated for teacher recruitment or they have misallocated those funds. I do know that the RSD is in a money crunch right now as they are paying their debts in a timely matter and there are talks off more layoffs. Have you tried e-mailing Vallas directly about your concerns/situation? If you are a member of UTNO you could also ask them for assistance. Good luck!
Thanks for the feedback. I spoke with a representative of the LA D.O.E.--I wanted to ascertain the organization responsible for disbursement of the funds. The rep did advise me to contact Vallas immediately & call the rep. back if the situation has not been resolved. I wish I had some idea of how many relocated/new teachers are in the same situation. To my principal's credit, he did try on numerous occasions to contact Robert Logan of the RSD who is in charge of releasing funds for the new teacher incentives; Logan won't return his emails or calls. It makes me question if the money is even there. I'll be writing Vallas this weekend & hope for a positive resolution.

Just for your infor...a couple of teachers at my school are working on the new CC. Get this...one teacher for each component (gr 1 SS, gr 1 SCI, gr 5 Math, etc...). One person writing the activities for a specific subject. And to top that, many are not even writing for the grade level they have experience teaching. So, the third grade Math CC may be written by a first grade teacher who has never taught third grade in their life!!! They are getting a nice chunk of cash, too.
Actually, the teachers are working on a REVISION of the CC. And they are under some specific guidelines and requirements. Every part goes through a process where it is reviewed and revised repeatedly before finally being sent to LDE staff for another review and recommendations for final revisions. The writers are not given carte blanche to do whatever they like. I don't know for sure that all the writers are teaching in the content area/grade level they are writing but I do know that the 3rd grade math writer is an excellent 4th grade math teacher and that she has been in close communication with several experienced 3rd grade math teachers throughout the revision.
As a writer (I'm a pre-k teacher and worked on the pre-k curriculum) I am happy to answer any questions anyone has to the best of my ability. Also, you can contact Carolyn Sessions in the Dept. of Ed. She's the director over this project and will be glad to give you accurate information about the writing and revision process, the controls in place, and the proposed future of the Comprehensive Curriculum.
The military will be moving my family to the Bossier City area this summer. I am looking at high school options for my children, 9th and 11th grade next year. I am a middle school math teacher and would like any information on middle schools as well. I am open to public or private. Does anyone know this area (or surrounding areas)?
I teach at an inner city elementary school in Shreveport. It's what I want to do. Funny all the negatives about Shreveport (Caddo Parish Schools)! My administration is very supportive! I have a personal laptop and 7 computers for student use, a resource room with any resource you could ask for including leveled books for reading, and a science lab! How many schools around can brag about these things? Not many! It's all about what you want and what kind of teacher you are. The one who wants to breeze by with not much work or the one who wants to make a difference.

Interesting post...do you think your situation is the norm in the area, or do you think your school might be the exception (other than Caddo Magnet, Caddo schools are low performing)? And if your school is the exception, does it feed into a safe middle and high school? Most people I have talked to are more worried about their safety than how hard they have to work. Any teacher who cares works hard regardless of the socioeconomic background of the students. I even had a second grade teacher who told me about getting stabbed with a pencil (by a second grader). The big question is: would you send your very shy, very smart, very unstreetwise (made that word up :-)) teenager to a high school in Caddo Parish (other than the magnet school)?

My children’s father family live in Jefferson Parish, in Kenner area and I will probably move in one of the surrounding parishes by the 2009-2010 school year.
I’m Florida certified to teach Pre-K-3rd and Special Education K-12, and also working towards my master’s degree in Special Education; by the time I move to LA.
I will have my 3 year non-renewal LA Teacher certification. I would like to know about some of your teaching experiences in Jefferson Parish, St. Johns Parish, and St. Charles Parish. What are some of the pros and cons? Where are the highest demands? Is there still a need for Special Education Teachers? Please share your experiences.
I am currently a teacher in Texas, but I am possibly looking to relocate. I want to be close to TX due to the fact that my family lives here, but I am losing a lot of money by being a TX teacher. You can belong to a union but cannot use any of their services, we pay into social security but cannot collect it when we retire, and we are not given permanent contracts until after we have been with a district for five years. That means for five years we have no rights, can be fired with no reason. Is LA like this, and, if not, what are some good districts near the TX/LA border? TIA.

I have taught in Caddo for years and have to give you fair warning. A lot of the schools are not good, poor admin, difficult students, high crime, etc. They will be the first ones to contact you and the first places that Human Resources send you for an interview. Do your research and only go to the ones that are of good quality. It is extremely difficult in this parish and you will get no help in the poor performing schools, mo matter what they tell you. I am currently in what was a good school until they appointed a poor admin who is running the school into the ground. Just be careful when you start interviewing.
I teach 4th grade reading. I am sooooo glad that day one for the LEAP test is over. The students had to write an essay and then do the reading comprehension. Tomorrow we have informational resources and some math. Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's downhill from here. Hey! I can go back to regular teaching again instead of test prep, test prep, and test prep. *sigh*
I am looking for field trip ideas for our fourth grade students. Our school is located in Lafayette and we would like to take our students on an end of the year trip that is educational but fun. It would be helpful if the trip somehow addressed the GLEs in the curriculum, even remotely. Any ideas?

I received an email at my school email address about the exchange. I think spots remain open because each state will have the same number of participants. Try contacting them at [email removed]
Glück!

As someone who is in a similar position to Adriana, I certainly appreciate any and all views and, being the intelligent woman that I am, can take it all with a grain of salt, do my own research, and make up my own mind. I find it truly off-putting and counter-productive to gleefully denounce people who have alternate points of view and celebrate their being unwelcome to post their experience and views. I find that kind of close-mindedness and judgment terribly eroding intellectually and spiritually, and I can only hope that those who are trying to kick folks off the boards are NOT teachers themselves. Kids do not need THAT as an example of how to communicate effectively or engage in debate.
I, for one, am well aware of the downside and dangers in New Orleans specifically right now; one of the reasons I am searching on the internet, and found this forum, is for just this kind of on-the-ground information. I have not been back to NOLA in a few years, and I don't have the funds to get there for a fact-finding on my own prior to the short timeline I face with TeachNOLA. However, clearly, I also know so much of the good of NOLA, else why would I want to go there to take on a new job, new life, etc?
So, thank you all, especially Mrs. D., for explicating your personal experience and views. I wasn't looking for a NOLA pep rally, so I'm grateful.
I have to tell you I feel awfully odd about inspiring such anger in someone (a stranger at that!). You are right that we should be able to debate issues, but that is not what happened on the thread in question. However, if your new to the site, I wanted to let you know that teachers.net has a wealth of information. It's really a great place to share information, and my discussion with the "ex-New Orleans possibly New-Orleans Bound teacher" is not the norm. It is really ok to debate issues here. The subject specific boards are very helpful with day-to-day classroom issues.
I actually feel a little stupid now, like maybe I was had. Now that I've read your post, I'm starting to think the other poster might not have been a teacher. The posts WERE a little strange. Every once in a while that happens, and then I step back and try to figure out if I just argued with a teenager! Anyway, welcome to teachers.net and thanks for the support. I never expect everyone (or anyone) to agree with me. I just enjoy the practical ideas I get from chatting with other teachers. By the way, I've changed my mind, I think NO could use some calm open-minded people like you! Good luck with you search.

Warning!!! No one wants to come to Morehouse to work anymore. No supplys are given to teachers and getting qualified help in the classrooms is a joke. Teachers are lied to constantly by central office and some of the principals are a joke. Technology has become a joke in this parish along with getting supplies and help. The only thing Morehouse Parish is concerned with is their football. Well football teams come and go! A student's education is lifetime.
Let's talk about the school board now. They hire a man that most teachers can not stand. Did they ask the teachers' opinnon? He knows nothing about early childhood because his only experience is at the high school level. He is a bald-headed, hot-tempered man. Yes! That is Tom Thrower. Lets see....how long it will take Morehouse Parish School Board to fire this one. Oh, yeah, that's right...they got to wait till he spends all the money the way he wants to and then they will decide to do something. When will they ever learn? Not soon enough for me, I am leaving this year. The aggravation is not worth it. I guess the school board is still trying to figure out why highly-qualified teachers are not applying in Morehouse. Duh.... Who would want to work in schools that have no art classes, muisic classes, libraries, etc..? Oh, but they have a football team!! That really makes the difference.

That seems to be the only way Morehouse Parish does seem to work...is by picking their favorites no matter how bad of a teacher they are. I am glad you made it out when you did! I would not wish this parish on my worst enemy.
