I just got home from taking the ESL MTEL. I felt GREAT after the paper portion. I studied for a week straight and feel certain that I got most of the questions right. Unfortunately, I went blank during the open response items. I made some rambling statements for the first one, got nervous, and just sat there. I think it took me 30 seconds to finish that one. The next two were even more horrifying. I went totally blank. I was literally sitting there in tears. Thankfully, I read the final item just fine. I just get so nervous when put on the spot like that - having no prep time, not being able to make notes. I'm really upset. Do you think it is possible to get a passing score of 240 if you do very well on the paper portion but only get maybe 5% of the possible points for the open response? The thought of having to sit through that part again makes me ill :(
KT I took the test yesterday, too! The open response is hard. It's not authentic at all. I wish they would just let us have a discussion with a human being and grade us on that. It's too awkward sitting in front of the tape recorder.

I kept thinking, "this is raising my affective filter!...See More

ML If you are failing by 4 points the open response is not going to improve enough to get you over the hump. I suggest you really focus on getting 2 or 3 more correct on the multiple choice part of the exam. As for open reponse though, they want to see that you can use transition words (e.g., first, second, later...) and that you speak grammatically c...See More
