I've been hired in Maryland by a non-profit to teach teenage students once a week. The institution does not want to sign a contract or to do a background check on me -- all they want are my tax forms and will be issuing me a 1099. Should I be worried about this? Generally when I've taught in other states, I've had to sign a contract and agree to a background check. Does anyone know what the laws are in Maryland? Should I be suspicious of this organization? Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated!
PL I don't know much about the laws in MD, but I'd be suspicious. By not giving you a contract, you have nothing to back you up in case of need (such as them not paying you, requiring more hours than agreed to, etc.).
