We are thinking of going to the Portland, Maine (Monmouth (SP?)) area for a week. Any fun things for boys who like trains, construction, swimming? Thanks!
My father was from Yarmouth, ME - so I have spent many summers in the area as well as lived in Gorham for five years. In Freeport is LL Bean so if you are campers or like the outdoors there are wonderful items to be purchased here...and boys will find great gear! In Bath is the maritime museum which is also very good. As a child and teen I loved going to Sebago Lake State Park and I also liked Crescent Beach. Old Orchard Beach is fun for a day or partial day of amusements, lobsters, and fried dough. For Lobster try the ClamBake it is fabulous. In the state capital, Augusta, there is a wonderful natural history museum. Here are just a few ideas from one who is considering rearing my own child "down east".

North Conway Scenic Railroad is just about an hour from Portland, Maine. North Conway is in the White Mountains of NH, and it is absolutely beautiful there too - worth the hour drive from Portland for a day trip! Another cool thing to do while in Portland is to go to Casco Bay lines - they run the ferry service to the islands. You can ride the "mailboat" - it goes around delivering the mail to the islands, and the "postman" gives you a narrated tour! (My aunt did it about 5 years ago and said it was great - I haven't been home enough in the summer to take advantage of it!) Feel free to write directly to me if you need more info - I live 30 miles south of Portland, but am there several days a week - that's where I attend university. Most of my classmates are from there, so I can easily acquire answers for you. (FYI - the water in the Gulf of Maine is FREEZING, so be forewarned for the boys who like to swim!)

Could anyone tell me what the job prospects for new secondary English teachers are like in the state of Maine? I'm getting certified in Hawaii, but I've figured out that it's too expensive here to raise a family on a teacher's salary, so I'm looking for opportunities in other states and want to look for an area of the country where there are teacher shortages. I understand that much of New England is overrun with unemployed teachers, and I wonder if this is also the case in Maine. I'd appreciate anyone's help! I have twelve years of experience teaching ESL in Taiwan.
I am a graduate student at Texas A&M University, Corpus Christi. I am conducting research for my master's degree in Curriculum & Instruction, specializing in math. Specifically, I created a survey regarding the role of virtual manipulatives in today's mathematics classroom. I am in the process of distributing this survey to as many mathematics teachers as possible. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Below is a direct link to the survey:

PLEASE forward this e-mail on to any teachers you know who are currently teaching mathematics-- elementary, middle, or high school. With your help, I hope to receive results from all over the country.
Any help you can provide in publicizing this survey is greatly appreciated.
I am not a teacher, but am going to school, majoring in Education while working. I lived and worked in Brunswick and thought I could assist with some information to that end.
Brunswick is home to Bowdoin College, a traditional ivy league university. So in downtown Brunswick you'll see plenty of students buzzing around, avante garde coffee shops, thrift stores, ethnic restaurants, diners, theaters, music centers.
Brunswick is one of the wealthier communities in Maine, but it isn't Hollywood, either. There are plenty of housing situations in Brunswick that would not cost you over 175,000.00. I have seen a few homes go for 150,000.00, but nothing I would raise a family in comfortably. Housing-wise, you could certainly find an attractive historic 2 bedroom home in Brunswick for not more than 175,000.00. The closer you get in town Brunswick, the more expensive it will be. Four bedroom homes typically run closer to 200,000.00. Maine boasts plenty of rolling hills right in the backyard, fall leave changes, and if you find a home on the coast, then seaside sunsets.
Brunswick is a coastal town with all kinds of inlets and juts and points with plenty of hidden mansions overlooking the ocean if you're willing to take a drive. Towns like Brunswick, Yarmouth, Falmouth, are bedroom communities to Portland and Bath (where Bath Iron Works shipyard is -- a very large employer).
Speaking of employment, there are 6 schools in Brunswick, and about 250 teachers. There is a public school, a private school, a Catholic school, and if you cannot find employment in Brunswick then there are several schools in Portland. Portland resembles a much larger Brunswick.
Keep in mind that Maine's salaries are somewhat behind when it comes to teaching and also overall. Maine's economy in my opinion is not at all as our state motto: As Maine goes, so goes the nation. That Maine can stay a great place to live regardless of that issue does say something.
Best of luck in your move and take advantage of all the information on the web about Maine. I hope you find Maine to be friendly (although I was born in the south - and one difference you'll find is northeasterners are up front, if they don't like you -- they'll tell you .. usually, southerners, not so much), beautiful, and an exciting place to live.
