I work at small urban KC charter schools. One is moving buildings next year, and they are going to want us teachers to help a lot with the move. I already know I'm not coming back to the schools for many reasons, but hadn't planned on letting them know that until my contract is up at the end of July. i'm definitely not being paid enough to help a move a whole art room, let alone the whole school. Does anyone know what my obligations are in the summer, I know it should be outlined in my contract, but it is fairly vague on the subject. It states we are contracted august - july, and have teaching obligations for the 180 day school year.

If I was to let them know I wasn't coming back, could they just drop me at the end of May (to save them paying me for june and july) since Missouri is "at will"?

Thanks for any help.
To concerned tired teacher Actually, You are under contract for what, 180 days?

The fact that you receive summer paychecks is simply due to the fact that your paycheck is divided into twelfths rather than just the actual teaching months.

You said your contract is from August through July??? Does it actually say that? Or does it specify the number of days? <...See More

to the OP again I also meant to ask -- what do you mean by "at will" state???

I've not heard that phrase and I've been teaching here for over 24 years.

not as concerned teacher Thanks everyone, I have been looking through my terms again (I just skimmed at first because I was stressed, my fault) but yes, I'm not as worried at all.

Even I'm not exactly sure how at-will works, but my principal made it clear at the beginning of the year that basically we can quit if we want, and just be paid through that day we quit...See More

ShowMe Tchr I can help with the "at will" terms. I have worked in both charter and public schools. In the charter schools, my contract was an at will contract which meant I could break the contract without the consequences that come from breaking a contract at a public school. At the same time, they could break their contract with me whenever they chose for an...See More
