I have been teaching comp.literacy for 12 yrs (I possess a k-8 certification). A colleague of mine possess same cert. and has been teaching comp.literacy for 11.75 years. However, he has been a teacher in the district for 24 years (11.75 in comp.lit and the other in phys.ed). My question is, based on seniority and tenure in NJ, if the district only requires one comp.lit. teacher, who would be chosen: me with 12yrs. of teaching the subject (and only 12 total in the district), or my colleage with less years teaching the subject but more years over me in the district)?
Hmm.. I think it depends on a number of things.

For example, is there anything else you can teach besides Comp. Literacy? Maybe the district is in need of a middle school L.A. teacher. They could possibly move you or your colleague to an open position.

bumping rights The person who has taught in the district longer (no matter what position) has bumping rights. However, if that person is Phys. Ed certified, he or she could bump a PE teacher instead of you (more likely if there are non-tenured PE teachers). Is your K-8 cert. only for Comp. Lit or Elementary?
