Hi, my name is Josh Lenker and I am a student at North Vally High School. North Vally is part of a poorly funded district (Three Rivers School District). There have been rumors of shortening the school year to save money. If anyone knows anything about our budget crisis please e-mail me at [email removed]

Hi, I just finished up my teaching certification program in Arizona. My husband is now looking at different schools in which to obtain his Master's degree. We were looking at information about Oregon, the Portland area, to determine if that would be a good place to move to. Unfortunately, I still have a lot of research to do still, and was wondering if I could get some non-biased information from others who live in Oregon.
1. What is the situation like for teacher's in Oregon? Overall, is it good, bad, new teacher's beware?
2. How does the salary compare to the cost of living (my husband will be going to school full-time so my salary would be the predominant one)? For example, could two adults, and one child live on a teacher's salary?
3. We would like to have our own house in a decent area, is this actually feasible given a teacher salary?
4. Is there a good resource of childcare available?
Is there any other information that I should know? State information?
i'm afraid that i'm going to have to say, new teachers beware. i love oregon, mind you, but the financial situation is so bad that there is little hope. we are waiting for january when the state will vote on an income tax ballot measure to help alleviate the funding situation for this year. it seems extremely unlikely that this measure will pass which means severe budget cuts for the entire state. the state's larget district, portland, already has the shortest school year in the nation and is looking to cut more days. my own district is looking at cutting 2 weeks and cancelling bus routes and p.e. the forecast is even more dire for next year. districts are closing schools and laying off teachers mid-year. i can't foresee that districts will hire new teachers anytime soon.
sorry to sound so bleak and depressing...

Portland and the surrounding districts in Oregon are in the toilet as is the economy of the state. If the Pacific Northwest appeals to you, I would look across the Columbia River to Vancouver, Washington. Things seem to be looking much brighter there. >>
Hey Oregon teachers, we're hearing rumors about you giving up benefits, raises, etc. due to the economy. Any truth to that? We would love to move to Medford area....can anyone help with info? We don't want to threaten our employment or finances.....I'm an 11th year junior high Enlish teacher, and my wife is in her 13th...high school. Thanks very much.....

Read the newspapers in the state for the current budget crisis. Almost all of the major papers, including the Medford Mail Tribune, are online. It's still a mess in Oregon, and I am not overly optimistic of job prospects for next year. I too am looking for work in Oregon, especially southern Oregon, as it is my home state.
In nearby Ashland, the district is closing down one elementary school, Briscoe, at the end of the year (declining enrollment), and if things do not get squared around, they may close another school.
I'm conducting a one question survey. If you have taken the Praxis II Content Knowledge Exam in your discipline, did you find the exam valid? Yes or No and Why or why not? This information will be used to determine whether or not to use this exam as a measure of content knowledge for teachers applying for advanced compensation. We already have portfolio and performance measurements, but we are trying to determine which exam would be appropriate to get an objective measure of content knowledge.
No, no, and NO. The Social Science content knowledge test was a series of random jeapordy facts stuffed into a 2 hour anxiety ridden quiz.

The best report I've seen on this is from The Education Trust called "Not Good Enough - A Content Analysis of Teacher Licensing Exams." I provide a link at the bottom of this message. I largely agree with their analysis, although I think their citations of "per cent correct answers" should have been adjusted downward to compensate for the fact that the Praxis II exams do not penalize for wrong answers, allowing test takers to guess without risk. A monkey would get 25% correct.
I have taken four of the Praxis II subject exams. Mathematics (10061), Physics (10261), Chemistry (20241) and General Science Part 1 (10431). All have scaled scores in the range 100-200.
All test mostly high school level material. Therefore any high school teacher with subject area competance should score in the 190's on these exams. The sad fact is that probably less than 5% actually score this high.
The mathematics exam was by far the most challenging. Any teacher scoring above a 190 knows mathematics at the high school level.
The other three exams were much less challenging. In my opinion high scores on these exams are not proof of competancy, but low scores (less than 180) are proof of a lack of sufficient content knowledge.
I have taken the Cbest test, and have not done well. I tried to get a tutor at PSU (where I graduated with my BA in ART), but they wanted $1,000.00. I have always done well in school, but need extra help in my math skills to pass this test. Do you know of any tutors or study groups for this test. Thank you, Cindy Mahoney

Just brainstorm as quickly as you can and start writing no less than 5 minutes after the test begins. I was almost unable to finish my last essay because of the time limit. When I got stuck on a thought, I started writing the second essay. The essays are not very difficult, but you do need to be able to think fast! Good luck!
I can't seem to pass the Reading portion of the CBEST.....does anyone have any suggestions on a good test book or where i can go for tutoring..
