Hi, I am also planning on moving to RI this summer. I am currently a special ed teacher and my cert is from 1-9. I am very nervous about getting a job in RI. Any advice or suggestions?

I don't know of any buzz words that would help. I do know that this is going to be the best hiring year here that there has been in a long time or there will be in the future. The uncertainty of what is happening in the pension system has caused many teachers to retire this year. Even with the tightening of the districts' budgets and the hiring of less teachers, sped teachers are going to be hired.
Don't get discouraged if you don't get hired right away. Many districts hire in August when enrollment and budgets are more certain.
The advice to get MA and CT certification also is a good one.
What affects the marketability of a professional educator? If you had to interview for a job as an educator, today, would you be hired, or would there be factors that affect your marketability? Take this survey...find out! Results will be posted May 11, 2009. NO NAMES PLEASE!
I am not from Providence but I am in Rhode Island. I do know that the major reason he left was that the school committee was upset with children stuck for hours on a school bus in a snowstorm. Now some of the blame could be laid at his feet for this as in retrospect he should have cancelled school for the day. However, other superintendents did not cancel either. Evans followed the procedure that had worked in Providence for years. However, this time events combined to form the perfect storm that bottlenecked the city for hours. Buses picked up some children and got stuck in traffic and the bus company had no idea where they were. The bus company did not supply the drivers with any means to reach the depot and if the bus driver did not have a cell there was no way to contact the depot or for the depot to contact them. Other buses never showed up at the schools and parents stuck in the traffic took hours to get there to pick up their child. The city gridlocked as with accidents at major intersections the plows could not get through, people and cars got stuck, and traffic backed up all over. It wasn't a large storm as the roads were clear and school started on time the next day, but it caused huge problems. The storm led to Evans not seeking to renew his contract and the states emergency management officer resigning.
Most of this was not, in my opinion, Evans fault. He relied on the judgement of those who have weathered many storms in the city and this time they were wrong.
Would he have stayed and been renewed if the snowstorm had not occured? My answer is probably yes. The storm and its aftermath just brought out everyone and anyone who had a grievance and caused Evans to not seek to renew his contract.
The new Providence superintent cancels fast. He does not want a repeat performance.

What is going on? Where is anyone who actually cares about teachers, be they novice or veteran? Aren't we supposed to care about ourselves? Where is the solidarity and all of that good stuff? Let us know what's going on. We are not alone.
You are asking a question that the Teaching Fellows group should be able to answer. They should know how many applied, went through the program, and were hired.
Check the link, especially the FAQs, and you should have more information. If you can't find the information you want, there should be a phone or an email to use.
riteacheru>Teach for America had their big kickoff in Rhode Island today. According to the paper they will have 30 jobs available for each of the next three years. So that's 90 jobs they can fill.
E...See MoreThis survey concerns all teachers; novice and veteran.
Please take time to complete this survey. It is for a thesis statement. I would appreciate your thoughts and opinions. After all, if it does not currently concern you, it will eventually. Results will be posted at the end of July, 2009.
Does anyone know, or know where I can find information, about getting certified? I will be graduating next year with a bachelors degree in childhood/special ed from a private college in New York. Thanks!
Alaska Delaware Idaho New Mexico North Dakota Rhode Island South Dakota Vermont (and Washington DC if I can find you!)
Quick Rules (I'll be emailing everyone specifics): *Each postcard has 2 state facts and then 1 fun fact (can be about anything from your class to your town..anything.)
*Postcards should be store bought
*You'll send out 5 cards a week starting mid-late September (you can put the same three facts on each card to make it easy)...that way you should have all 50 postcards by the beginning of December. There is an order to the five states...you'll see who you send yours out to once I send the final addresses email.
*With the addresses, I am sending an attachment of the letter I will be sending home to parents. You can personalize it to fit your class! :)
*Have more questions? Email me! [email removed]
Everyone involved is very excited and I know the kiddos are going to love this. I hope you're one of the missing states!
