Tennessee is needed for a 2009 Christmas card exchange. It is a lot of fun, and quite easy to do. I'll send all directions to help you along. Any takers? Only catch - most cards will be Christmas, but I can try to request "holiday" cards if your school does not allow "Christmas".
I've taught the past 4 years about 30 miles outside of Nashville. We are now packing up and moving down to the suburbs of Memphis. Anyone have a TN EDUCATION JOBS ONLY website? I'm frustrated with monster, hotjobs, ect.

Born in Palm Beach, having a mom that taught in Belle Glade and then up here in Chattanooga, an aunt who taught in the Space Coast for over 30 yrs, etc.... I can say that kids are kids, but I will say you will find more pleasant students up here than down there simply b/c our state hasn't handed over all the teachers rights to the parents...which makes FL students respect the teachers less.
I've worked in 4 schools now in my district and found that overall the kids are pleasant, even in my inner city schools. BUT, here's the big BUT, the kids in the inner city act just as bad, if not worse than some that you might find in the Miami-dade area.... Now near Knoxville, you'll have several good areas that are affluent, though I don't think you get paid even as much as we do in Chattanooga. And it depends on the age of the kids you teach.... I think TN teachers have it far easier than FL teachers for the most part, but you have better pay, support to do National Board Certification, and other things we don't have.
Thank you so much for your insights! I really appreciate you taking the time to respond with your opinions. Hopefully I will be able to experience teaching in TN very soon!

Does anyone know if there are any good teaching opportunities around Nashville or 30 minutes away from Nashville? I'm a music major, and I have an opportunity to move down there with my roommate and live. I'm from Pa.

Hi! What is the best avenue to pursue becoming a substitute in Fayette Cty? I have just moved to the area and am not sure where to start. Thanks in advance for your help! Nancy
Ok, so I went to an interview a couple days ago in a different city about 3 hours away from my home. Its where I want to teach at, but in a very low income school district. Now that part doesn't bother me at all. So I drive all the way there and go to this school. I tell the secretary that I am there for an interview with Mr. "Principal." She then tells me that he is not available and that he told her to inform everyone that the position had been filled. Ok so at this point I am getting really peeved because I had just talked to him last Thursday right after school got out(interview on Monday). This was a call back from him calling me the same day mind you. So I decide to ask questions and I tell the lady how I was from out of town and how I had just talked to him a few days before. I then asked what position was filled because he told me kindergarten and third. I was for Kindergarten. She said the 3rd grade position like it was the only one. I then tell her I was for the K position. So already things are strange, but there is more to come! She told me he wasn't even in the building that day and so she called him. She told him the situation and so he told her to let another guy go ahead and interview me. This guy was standing in for the principal for that day and was a retired one, not really working at the school, just standing in for a day. Strange, but I was like ok whatever its an interview. So the guy looks over my resume and likes it and asks me one question about my philosophy of teaching. That's it! The rest was about me, like where Iwent to school, would I be able to move, etc... I was able to ask a few questions but not like I wanted to. In the process he was telling me about how he didn't know if the position was really open and how enrollment was down and without actually saying it, said if you did get the job if enrollment was down again I would not have a job. In the end of this ten minute interview he said he really liked me and would recommend me to the pricipal and regional super. So I am wondering if I should even take this school seriously, missing appointments, interview with someone who does not even know I'm coming, and just lack of professionalism seemingly? I need a job bad, but this one??? What do you all think, is this a norm or just all out bad and I should run if they call me back? Thanks for reading my longness but it has been bugging me all week!
There are always positions in the inner city...whether or not you want to go there...well, that's up to you. Now, if you personally submit your resume to the elementaries you're interested in and suggest them to consider you for any midterm openings (FMLA leaves?) They may keep your info handy, especially if you give your references or letters of recommendations on hand..

Economy may be rough, but as a teacher in 2 inner city schools, daughter-in-law to a principal, mother to 3 in the public schools ...I feel confident that if you have an area they need, you'll be scooped up. Email me if you have any more questions
