Judy: I have not heard anything from the 2 schools I contaced about the ESL positions. So, I have not booked a flight for the 14th. Oh, well, what do you think?
Thanks for the response. I am male. I've tried to contact the schools without success and even tried to contact the head of the department, nothing! That does not give me much hope so I am passing on MCS. Pursuing other avenues in other states including St. Croix. That's the one I really want.
Good luck this year and thanks for your kind help.

I am working on my Bach. Degree to become an elementary school teacher, but I want to substitute and the problem is I can only sub three days a week. Is that a problem or will they work with your schedule? I am in the process of getting hired as a sub, but I am afraid if I tell them I have classes tues and thurs that they may not call me. Does anyone have some advice? I am going to put on my application that I have classes two days a week but I don't know if that will matter. I have heard if you turn them down if they call they will never call back, but what if you specifically say you can only work certain days, does that matter?
I am in your position too, except that I won't start classes until the fall semester for my bachelors, and I haven't gotten hired as a sub yet. I've put in my application just last week. I was talking to a friend who is a middle school teacher and she said that I should sub, and if I couldn't work a day because of a foster care appt. I would just tell them no. She said that they really need subs, and seemed to think it wouldn't matter. Others on this board said subbing lowers your chances of getting a full time job! Now I don't know what to believe.
How did you decide to do elementary education instead of middle and high school? I am trying to make this decision now. Loriann

I am 43 going back to school to get a degree in education. I see though that I have to decide right away whether or not I want to teach middle school or elementary. If I teach middle school, will I have to have a specialized area that I teach?
Is job satisfaction higher in elementary or middle school? What is a good area that has high retention rates. It would be nice to teach German but that would be a high school class. I wonder what you all think...am I too old to be a teacher just starting out at 47-48 years of age?
Is it really difficult to get a job? I have put in an application to substitute teach, will that hinder my chances of full time teaching? I read that somewhere on this site and it surprised me!!!
I have started my year with Rainbow Fish and Corduroy for the last few years and was wondering if anyone had a new idea (character/story/book) that is used to start your year off. After reading these books, we "tour" the school looking for Corduroy's button or Rainbow Fish (followed by colored goldfish snack when we get back to the room). Thanks in advance for any help. Hope you have a safe, fun learning environment this year.
Judy: How's everything in Memphis? FT job? Did Curtis help you or was it an empty offer? Any news of that job fair on the 14th? Just curious and still looking for work!!!
Hi Sammy I inquired about the job fair but recruitment said it was by invitation only. But that's ok because I wasn't really interested in middle school. They said I could call the schools myself and I could teach middle school. I am certified from K-8. Even though, i still sub for them on ocassion and I love when the students change classes though. Recruitment emailed me asking me to complete a survey and I did. They were asking if I would be available for them to place me and be flexible or do I want certain areas. I said I'll be flexible. My take on this, is they are still placing people at the last minute. I do believe that they will call or email you for a position. Did they ask you to complete the short survey yet? I don't know who Curtis is, but I emailed him back on this site. I don't know his email though. I'll email him again. He said that he had a possible job for both of us. It may be an ESL position. I don't think he knows that I am just elementary though. Try to email him also. He may be a principal, but I just do not know. I'll write later.

I got the same survey and they asked me if I still wanted to keep my file actice. I checked yes. Despite having a good background in ESL or at least I think so I have not received any bites. I have applied all over the country and have gotten nothing. Oh, well.... maybe something might pop up soon. Best of luck and keep in touch, Sammy

Time is running out to bring a foreign exchange student to your home, school and community. Several students assigned to the Miss Tennky AFS Volunteer Leadership Team area still need placements for the fall. Those students neeeding placements are from Thailand (2 females and 2 male) and the Netherlands (1 male). They are all good students and are eager to find families who are eager to share their hearts and home with them.
Please, call Nadia Clendending at 1-800-876-2377, Ext 118, to be sure which students are still available ASAP. The students are scheduled to arrive by August 9th. Families in the student's native countries must know the exact location of their children before they leave. You may fill out preliminary application on [link removed].
Make a move to make a difference and help spread global peace and understanding.

Judy, if you go to educational.net and check out jobs in TN, MCS is in need of 100 new teachers and ten more ESL teachers dated July 28th. Could this be true???
[link removed]
Check that out and you will see what I mean
By the way, have an interview coming up for an ideal job next week. I am a strong candidate. If that falls thru, I might give MCS a call, but I doubt it.
Hi Sammy Hope things go well with your interview. It sounds like it went well. Hope you find out soon. Did they contact you yet? Don't give up yet. If this is what you want to do then do it. Eventually something will come up. But my situation is a different story. I used to teach in a private HeadStart in Chicago. The good thing is I am a vested teacher there. Then I moved to Memphis about 8 years ago. I will tell you it has been more challenging to teach here. I think even more than Chicago was. I will tell you I have learned. And it makes me feel better that I know how to work with challenging students. My HeadStart classes were great though. I left a good job to move here. I also subbed in Chgo. Public Schools for a few years too. I will tell you that you basically have to know a principal to get hired as a teacher in Chgo. Public Schools. It helps a great deal to be bilingual though and that's where you have an advantage. I have went back to school 2 years ago in the medical field but I didn't take the certification test I needed. But now i will pursue that again. I will try to get into the medical field and also continue to sub. Unfortunately, no one has called me for a job yet. They just sent me another survey again. A school called me to sub while a teacher takes a maternity leave for a month. I told them no, because here you are paid as a daily sub if the teacher has leave. It's not worth it. It's way too much work. I just want to tell you that life goes on even after you don't teach. There are other fields out there. I don't know why they say there is a teacher shortage. i am sure a lot of teachers quit because of behavior. But there are other careers out there. Thanks for hearing me vent. I don't want to bring anyone down by me going back to school, but i feel that's the best choice.
Take Care

Judy: Yes, I got that survey and ignored it. Then got another one and have chosen to ignore it as well. Seeing how MCS operates, you and I are better off not working there. It simply is not worth it. By the way, I did not get that job in Virginia. I have decided to throw in the towel for a few reasons and will try to find something different. I wish you all the best in your future endeavors and I am sure all will be fine.
Thanks for all, Sammy Johnson
