The progressive movement in the United States stopped child labor, gave women the right to vote and addressed reform of local governments, medicine, and poverty just to name a few. Progressives include amazing people like Teddy Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson - both of whom should still be admired. We can learn a thing or two from some of the amazing leaders of the time.
I'm not saying that the government needs to own a power plant, but I don't really see how private companies are some sort of great hero here either. I for one have noticed a lot of unethical behavior from the private sector as well as the public - GE, Nestle, Enron, Walmart just to name a few - very few... I don't really trust anyone these days. It seems like too many of our corporate leaders have a morale flexibility that makes me sick - it's only about the bottom line. But since the government is paid off by the corporations, how are they any different from privatization anyways? I'm not really happy either way, and I don't know why you would sit there and knock the government and not acknowledge that private companies are just as unethical if not more so. I'm exhausted by people only looking at one side of the story.

I've President Obama explain to us that these puplic employees are our friends and neighbors. I'm sorry but my friends and neighbors don't come to my house every April 15 and take money from me to fund thier pensions and pay their medical insurance.
The children will suffer if the teachers have to contribute to thier retirement? The children already are suffering from all the liberal multicultural bs you feed them everyday.
And I also want to know what a "liberal multicultural bs" education is anyways? Algebra? Chemistry? Social Studies? Do you mean that schools read books that have people in them who aren't white? Is that a problem? Do you mean to tell me we shouldn't educate kids about other cultures? People in this country are already collaborating with people all over the world for their jobs. My husband goes to China and India since his company outsourced a lot of work there. If we're becoming more global are you insinuating we still shouldn't care about other cultures or how they work? My cousin is a computer programmer who works with other brilliant minds in real time on his computer to design games. He works with people all over the world. And this trend is only growing.
I agree that schools need to be reformed and that there are issues with what is being taught and how. But that isn't solely the teachers fault. Teachers teach what they are told to teach. The fact the same old curriculum they are forced to teach is out of date is the fault of many - the government, the media, the parents, the administrators, and wise-asses who make nasty comments and don't try to educate themselves on how they can actually help. Or just take easy pot shots at teachers on an on-line forum.

terrieEric, who do you think mandates teachers to teacher the liberal multicultural bs? Our legislators.

My state took away my social security that I qualified for by teaching in the Lutheran school system for 15 years. They cut my social security in half ( which I paid for). Thank God the democrats were elected again in Illinois or we would be facing the same thing as our Wisconsin brothers and sisters. I am a bear fan, but I stand with all Wisconsin teachers. It is time for the workers to fight the rich... Let the rich pay their fair share. The top two percent in the country have 95% of the wealth and it is certainly not the teachers. Let the rich pay. I do not understand why teachers who work hard every day for the children in this country are being portrayed as villians. We pay our taxes, we work for all the children in this counry. We have put up with no child left behind etc. It is time for those parents who think we do a good job to speak up. It is time for all middle class citizens of this great country to unite against the rich, who have not paid their fair share since both Bush's were in power.
We want to get our kids to love reading. We want to instill curiosity; we want them to learn to ask good questions about the information they are getting. We want to help them learn teamwork, ethics, critical thinking, and problem solving. Instead we walk into a broken system that asks us to teach them to take your precious test that measures none of these things.
It is not solely the teacher's fault. They probably share less of the burden of the blame than the people on this forum complaining about them. Teachers are teaching what they are told to teach and they are even being told how to teach it. Stop scapegoating. The SYSTEM is broken. On every level, people need to step up and demand that the education system is reformed, not that kids are given ridiculous tests that measure almost nothing useful. Let's change the tests. Let's change the way our schools run. We aren't preparing kids for Jeopardy. So the fact that there is a problem with the schools is everyone's fault. That includes you.

How do you think the customers would percieve your performance?
We have disabled students that are expected to score the same as abled ones.
We have students who don't speak English graded with native English speakers.
We have kindergarteners who can't count to 10 and have no idea what a letter is let alone the alphabet.
Who's job is it to be sure Johny and Susie know their math facts? Phonics rules? I can present them but if parents don't give time and support for memorization I can't. I have a test to cover.
Wonder why young people have no work ethic, or ethic of any kind? You said we can't teach that.

That's the best reason you have? You don't have a Union so I should suffer?? Really?? Form a Union, man.
> Yes your job is important but it doesnt make you any better > than the next person. People accuse the rich of being elitist > but it is people in unions who act like they are God and Deserve > everything on a silver platter and should not have to suffer > like the rest of us common peasants.
Easily remedied: Join a Union and join the nobility.
> And lets look at the test scores shall we? All across the > nation scores are pathetic. That is all the proof we need to > know teachers are not doing the job they are paid for. Really believe that? When's the last time you spent ANY TIME watching a classroom and a teacher?
b>I suppose Firemen don't deserve any pay 'cuz all they do is show up and poor water on the fire! And I suppose you think a policeman only shows up after the crime is committed.
Many people do not approve of comparisons to Hitler ever. I for one do not approve of either side doing this - never have, never will. Once again, it's being ridiculously hyperbolic. Walker like Hitler? Idiotic. Obama like Hitler? Assanine.
And people on BOTH sides are huge hypocrites - they think it's okay when their party does it, but scream and cry when the other one does. Do you really think that all dems think it's okay to make comparisons to Hitler, or are you just trying to insight anger? Because even when I saw the Republicans doing it, I didn't think "all Republicans think this is okay" or "all Republicans are stupid". I have many friends in both parties and I don't like making sweeping and ridiculous generalizations about people in either party, so please think about it when you get angry and think these things and really think about it before you write them down for the world to read. It's easy to lash out in anger. And the easy way is what has gotten this country to this broken, angry, polarized place.
"Then whats to be expected from liberals. They > did the same thing to Bush and others. Liberals see nothing > wrong with doing anything it takes to make people see it their > way and to do as they say. No one else is allowed to have an > opinion unless it is the same as theirs."
So when Republicans say that "liberals" hate America what is that? Isn't that trying to say liberals can't have an opinion opposite to theirs or they "hate America"? What kind of message do Bill O'Reilly, Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, Sarah Palin and Rush Limbaugh send to those who have a different opinion than they do? That they welcome dialogue and that we should respect different opinions? I for one think both parties are hypocrites and neither one is contributing to making this country any better. And neither do your harsh generalizations and nasty comments.
I admire the teachers of Wisconsin standing up for the right to negoitate. The Tea Party Republicans are trying to destroy ALL wage earners. Not ONE single Tea Party Rebublican in the legislature ran on a platform of destroying unions and the teachers MUST stand together against the selfish interests of Walker and his financial supporters the billionaire Koch brothers. Walker created a false crisis to destroy teachers. The Tea Party Republicans are dividing this country and trying to start class warfare in our political process. Unions (public or private) are MORE American than the global corporations Walker represents! Stand together and stay determined, YOU have the high ground!
We invite you to join us for our one-week workshops in June 2011. As NEH Summer Scholars at the “American History through the Eyes of a California Family” workshop, you will use the artifacts and archival sources of both the Dominguez Rancho Adobe Museum and CSU Dominguez Hills Special Collections to trace the Dominguez family history for over two centuries. Their history and lands are entwined with California 's rich Indian, Spanish, Mexican and American history.
NEH workshops feature well known scholars, hands-on work with artifacts and archival documents, workshops and experiential learning opportunities that will bring history to life, and field trips to deepen historical and cultural connections. Workshops address the Dominguez family business and inheritance strategies and their relationship to natives and migrants from varied social and cultural backgrounds. Successful applicants whose title will become NEH Summer Scholars will also analyze how territorial industrial expansion transformed the American people and how massive immigration after 1870, including the Chinese, some of whom became laborers on Dominguez lands, formed new social patterns and concepts about national identity.
$1200 stipends are offered to help cover travel, lodging, and meal expenses.
Workshops will be offered twice and applicants may apply to one, but not both, workshops. The first is the week of June 13-17, 2011 and the second is the week of June 20-24, 2011. Continuing Education Units offered. Applications due March 1st.
And by the way, who do you think is paying for their five star hotels and meals and all other travel expenses. It sure isnt coming out of their own pockets! Bunch of thieves like the uinions is all Democrats are.

Really? Do you really believe that people don't change their minds? Or that they can't disagree with someone they support in general on one particular issue? Or is life really that black and white in your world? This was not a part of the platform. Fixing the budget is, but going after collective bargaining rights has nothing to do with the budget.
