The children will suffer if the teachers have to contribute to thier retirement? The children already are suffering from all the liberal multicultural bs you feed them everyday.

Sure, it would be great if every child left the school system knowing how to think, how to act, how to be a great and productive citizen, capable of facing the world on their own with the skills they learned in school.

That would be great. But reality kicks in. Teachers are not allowed to teach skills like thinking, reasoning, etc. They are, however, required to teach test-taking skills. To the proponents of modern eduction, being able to answer a multiple choice question correctly is MUCH more important than being able to find the answer through reasoning. Sort of the difference between a multiple-choice question and an essay question.

Calculators? Required. After all, what's more important? That they get the answer right or that they know how to figure it out on their own. It's hard to test "figuring" skills, compared to the canned "absolute right" answer. Just think. One of these days, with the new system, you'll be able to rest assured that your doctor will be able to treat you based on their scores on a standardized test, rather than their ability to think of a better solution. Your pilot will treat every emergency according to a set rule, rather than taking in other factors. Your teacher will teach how to answer question one way, rather than how to find the best answer. You get my idea.

Why the internet? Ask your school when the last time they were given money for new text books.

Anybody can pass now? Sure, since we live in a society where everyone not only plays, but they all win. There is no motivation to better yourself if you can't lose.

20 years ago? Yes, but there are still teachers that WANT to teach, yet are tied to a "new and improved" system of test taking, not test thinking.

Rich? I'm sorry that after 27 years, 6 years of college (not to mention the 27 extra years of more and more classes), working weekends and summers planning, grading, improving, etc., (time most think teachers do nothing), and I just barely make over 40k. Yes, to some that is rich, but to most others with the same education, not even close.

Is that a problem? Do you mean to tell me we shouldn't educate kids about other cultures? People in this country are already collaborating with people all over the world for their jobs. My husband goes to China and India since his company outsourced a lot of work there. If we're becoming more global are you insinuating we still shouldn't care about other cultures or how they work? My cousin is a computer programmer who works with other brilliant minds in real time on his computer to design games. He works with people all over the world. And this trend is only growing.

I agree that schools need to be reformed and that there are issues with what is being taught and how. But that isn't solely the teachers fault. Teachers teach what they are told to teach. The fact the same old curriculum they are forced to teach is out of date is the fault of many - the government, the media, the parents, the administrators, and wise-asses who make nasty comments and don't try to educate themselves on how they can actually help. Or just take easy pot shots at teachers on an on-line forum.
