Wisconsin Teachers Chatboard

Teachers should be respected!

I have taught for 35 years in Illinois. We negotiated contracts and the state should live by them. I fully support the Wisconsin teachers and all unions. My state took away my social security that I qualified for by teaching in the Lutheran school system for 15 years. They cut my social security in half ( which I paid for). Thank God the democrats were elected again in Illinois or we would be facing the same thing as our Wisconsin brothers and sisters. I am a bear fan, but I stand with all Wisconsin teachers. It is time for the workers to fight the rich... Let the rich pay their fair share. The top two percent in the country have 95% of the wealth and it is certainly not the teachers. Let the rich pay. I do not understand why teachers who work hard every day for the children in this country are being portrayed as villians. We pay our taxes, we work for all the children in this counry. We have put up with no child left behind etc. It is time for those parents who think we do a good job ...See More

crazypeople You know what conditions are like before you become a teacher. If you dont like it find a new job. Its not the tax payers responsibility to give your a high standard of living for doing much of nothing. And lets face it, test scores prove teachers are not doing very much to begin with.

Yeah, just blame the teachers for kids' low test scores! What happened to the responsibility of parents who are responsible for bringing kids into this world? And what about society? From what kids see on television & in the movies, either on DVD or in a theater, no wonder many of them have no desire to learn. You can't bring a horse to the water trough if the horse does not want to drink. Many kids do not want to learn. So, "crazypeople," go back to your life that only you do well & with a tremendous amount of effort, because you are one-of-a-kind.

Many do not know what it like to teach before they become a teacher - we lack parental support, societal support, administrative support and work under ridiculous conditions. Did any teacher dream that they would have to manage a classroom with 30+ kids whose abilities range so widely. Or that you wouldn't have enough books for all the students? Or that there wouldn't be enough paper to make copies for the kids. Or that there wouldn't be a single computer that was made after 1995? And why we decided that age is the way we will distinguish what you should know when you should know it is asinine. It is unfair to teachers. As anyone with children knows, some learn to walk at 8 months and others 18. We become teachers because we want to change the world and we continue to teach (at least some do) because we love our students and what we do.

We want to get our kids to love reading. We want to instill curiosity; we want them to learn to ask good questions about the information they are getting. We want to help them learn teamwork, ethics, critical thinking, and problem solving. Instead we walk into a broken system that asks us to teach them to take your precious test that measures none of these things.

It is not solely the teacher's fault. They probably share less of the burden of the blame than the people on this forum complaining about them. Teachers are teaching what they are told to teach and they are even being told how to teach it. Stop scapegoating. The SYSTEM is broken. On every level, people need to step up and demand that the education system is reformed, not that kids are given ridiculous tests that measure almost nothing useful. Let's change the tests. Let's change the way our schools run. We aren't preparing kids for Jeopardy. So the fact that there is a problem with the schools is everyone's fault. That includes you.

Neal I don't know what you do for a living but what would you do if your peformance were based on wrong, or substandard raw materials, and you could do nothing to purchase the correct or standard materials?

How do you think the customers would percieve your performance?
