It feels like I have no control or contributions to make and it seems no one really wants to fix anything, and it makes me question why I'm a teacher in a society that doesnt learn. I just wanted to see if this is a common response everywhere or just in my circle... Anyone care to share their perspective?
In addition, I have spent 3 weeks listening to 7 different teachers, teach expository and persuasive essays in every way possible. Every teacher is using the same materials, prompts, fill in the blanks, etc. They have done everything short of writing the essay themselves and have the children memorize it. All the students are learning this in 9th and 10th grade because the STAAR test starts in 2 weeks. So the LEP children will write 2 essays: one for TELPAS another one for STAAR.
Someone please tell me how I can motivate or encourage these children to write the practice essays that they are given for a grade. We have had some students wad up the paper, throw it out and walk out of class. They speak, read and write perfect English. I just don't know what to do. Calling the Parents does not make a difference. I'm regretting this career choice and am seriously considering g voting against Dreamers since our school consists of 70% Dreamers and only 17% of them make a passing grade. The others are getting their grades manipulated so they can get out of the school.
Someone please help. I've already tried the Assistant Principal, Principal and Superintendent with no luck. "They appreciate my willingness to improve education and will look at my notes to see what can be done". In other words: pat my head and send me back to the same thing. Can anyone give practical advice that will motivate these kids? I WILL NOT REWARD THEM WITH CANDY BECAUSE THEY WRITE ONE SENTENCE OR BUY PIZZA FOR THEM BECAUSE THEY FINISHED THE ESSAY OUTLINE THAT WAS DUE LAST WEEK.
Start by building a relationship with these students. Notice when they have a new haircut, do something polite, come to class on time, come prepared with supplies, put their name and date on their paper, etc., Use their name and give specific praise - I like how you got your paper and pencil out right away, great job getting your name and date on your paper, I see you are off to a great start with a topic sentence, etc. I firmly believe you can't teach students you don't like, so stop giving excuses and find something to like about each of these students.
Last advice, if you want to continue teaching in your current district or anywhere else - keep your opinion on dreamers and the gossip you've heard about your students and their families to yourself. Unlike other professions, once blackballed, you are highly unlikely to ever get another job in education. I hope your situation improves. Good luck!
My new mentors are great! And teaching K-12 has far more challenges than what they tell you, especially if they don't train. I'm happy to know that you are committed to SPED. That has even more challenges. I hope you continue to enjoy your work.
https://www.donorschoose.org/project/th...See MoreI am new to donors choose and wonder if any other teachers uses it. If so what is the best way to get donors? My students could really use a projector however I can afford it. Someone told me about donor choose so I figure I try it out.
This is the link the website gave to help my students.
So I'm currently in a district that does not have adequate programming for my classroom. I'm teaching a 3rd-5th grade self-contained classroom. The last teacher I heard was using what she could of the general ed, on level programming when possible, but mostly made up her own things. I don't want my current situation to happen next year. I'm looking for programs that target ELA and Math, and fits students with, disabilities, ESL, and behavioral issues. I know, I'm asking for a lot, but any help would be great! I already presented Math in Focus and Readers and Writers Workshop, which got turned down. Thank you again!
How do teachers feel about having their God given right to self preservation stripped by having to work in a gun free zone. Seems to me a teacher qualified in weapon training and mental condition should be allowed to consealed carry.
Second, the right to keep and bear arms needs clarification for our times. Does and should this mean any and all arms? Does that mean citizens can have bazookas? Grenades? The fastest shooting weapon used in the revolutionary war only fired 3 to 4 bullets per minute (according to wikipedia). Now, we have weapons capable of firing 800 rounds per minute!
Third, to answer your question - I'm happy to work in a gun free zone. I have enough responsibilities as a teacher and would not want to add training to carry a weapon - especially since this would simply add to my workload, without increasing my pay and I have enough of that already.
