Get to know their names and faces as quickly as you can. Use the student names when you are addressing them. Students your age need structure and consistency. If your classroom does not know bounds for correct behavior, then you will have to drill them on how to organize my books and folders, how to line up without talking, sitting up straight and being attentive. If your students already have basic discipline down, then make sure the content you are delivering is engaging (images, web sites, video), has a purpose, relates to them in some way - Have you ever wanted to visit a new land?

If you are keeping the students busy and on task, and you are putting some distance between you and the child - there is no question that you are the teacher and they are the student.

If you are letting them do what they want to do in class, without consequence, then you are their friend.
