My husband plans to apply ...See MoreI am currently looking around at teacher certification programs for a career switch. I already have a bachelors and master's degree in biology so I am mainly looking for a teaching program that would allow me to get a state certification (which I understand is the basic requirement for becoming a DODEA teacher).
My husband plans to apply for a teaching position with the DODEA next spring, and I was wondering if there were any online options (accepted by the DODEA) where I could get my certification and complete my student teaching abroad on the US military base.
Addit...See MoreYou might want to inquire directly with HR as well. With your degrees in Biology, you already meet the subject area course requirements for DoDEA for a Biology cert (and maybe some additional science areas). So you would mainly be looking at how to meet the "minimum of 18 SH of professional teacher education course work" requirement.
Additionally, some states (like Florida I believe), would give you a Bio cert based on your current degrees and passing their teacher certification tests. So, between all of that, there should be some short cuts to DoDEA qualification that would require a teaching degree.
You could also look into Teacher Ready, that leads to a Florida certification. The student teaching requirement seems to not that burdensome and can be done outside of Florida (including DoDEA schools).
teachinghelpThat is a good idea, thank you! I will reach out to the HR to see. Yes I basically just need those 18 SH of teaching coursework I believe and the student teaching.
I wish there was a search feature because I'm sure that this has been asked before.
If my retired mother moves with my husband and two children OCONUS would she be included in our LQA? She will retire from teaching next year and was considering moving in with us. I just want to know how that would impact a future dodea position. Thanks!
DaliAh okay - I read some other posts discussing size of household and wasn't sure how "household" was defined/what are the rules (I haven't seen the paperwork). Good to know that she could stay with us - just needs to follow regular visa rules for the country - Thanks everyone for the info!

As I understand it, most DODEA teachers starting their teaching careers at school districts outside the federal government. To that end, what becomes of the years earned in state retirement systems? Is there a way to mesh the state retirement system earnings with the federal government retirement system?
It varies widely by state, how many years you have vested, etc. Some states let you (or make you) cash out. Some let you stay vested after a certain number of years. I only had a few years in two different stateside districts so didn't really give it much thought or attention. If you have 10 years into a decent system, it gives you some other factors to think about it.
Hi all! Did anyone recently interview for a sped position at Osan airbase in South Korea? If so, how did it go? I interviewed 2.5 weeks ago and haven't heard anything. Is this normal?
I keep looking at my application trying to figure out if there are ways to improve it. Does anyone have any tips on what you think a searchable application should have included, or what attachments you recommend including with the application? Thanks in advance!
hahaIt seems to be pretty rare. The only times I ever heard of were really because the candidate backed out/changed their mind. I'm sure it does happen but it's not generally something most people would hear about. Partly because it is uncommon and partly because how would we hear about it (other than someone posting about it on hear or similar place)?
Has anyone heard more on the reduction of troops and their families from Germany? I'm curious as to what the openings are gonna look like DODEA wide next year with this going on.
IcanreadDepending where you are in Japan, you may have bigger houses. In Okinawa, many houses are Americanized with large kitchens, living rooms, and lots of closet space.
