OverThere@HelpOthers. Thank you - it seems between the two schools there are about 550 kiddos. Our middle/high school have 2300 between them, so it would be nice to go smaller. Of course, that is if I even get an interview (fingers crossed).
So when you're packing, do you separate what you want shipped through HHG, what you want shipped as unaccompanied baggage and what you want stored before the packers get there? Also, do they pack what's going to be stored or do we?
As ha...See MoreYes you want to organize as much as possible in advance. We did t go so far as to have items in boxes or tubs but definitely had all UB in one room of the house. They should come and do a walkthrough before packing day and take an inventory so make sure to ask your packers specific questions also about what would help them help you.
As haha mentioned, it is really a commotion. You might want to have a friend or two over to help kind of keep an eye as you will be pulled in a lot of directions and feel overwhelmed.
I've got a question regarding salary. Once hired, when do you receive your first paycheck? Is it once school starts? Is it once you've signed the official offer? Is it once you arrive? I'm curious since I've accepted a job, but I'm not sure about payment.
RL85Well never mind what I said. My passport official said I would need form DD 1614 because the METR and transportation agreement don't indicate where my new duty station is. HR was thrown off when I explained the situation.
hahaIt shouldn't. Many people have bad to mediocre credit when they are hired (better financial health/security is one of the reasons people pursue DoDEA).
I've also known people with bankruptcies, etc. who were still hired with DoDEA.
Please help understand what might be happening with this situation. I had one interview on Friday, was asked for a second interview today to be held on Wednesday. About 2 hours after receiving the email for time on the second interview, I received and email from the EAS system saying I wasn't selected for the position I am interviewing for on Wednesday. To top off this craziness, the EAS system email came in at 10:00 pm for the location I am interviewing for. Please help me understand this! Do I still have hope for the position?
HelpOthersIgnore the automated e-mail. Ask the person who scheduled the interview if you are still interviewing or if the names for the position have already been given to HR. If you are still interviewing, just do your best and hope for the best.
I am a newish teacher (certified K-6) beginning my research into DoDEA schools overseas. My dad is still active duty, and I went to a DoDEA high school in Germany.
How difficult is it to pick your base? I am specifically interested in England. Is that a popular place, or do positions open up there? This would be a few years down the line for me after I get my master's in reading. Just looking for some information as to how hard it would be to get a position in England and stay there.
I...See MoreIf England is where you want to be, you should just wait. It's unlikely that you'll get a transfer there any time soon if you accept a position in another location. You'll be way too low on the transfer round list as a new teacher and new to DoDEA. Also, there isn't much indication that there will even be a transfer round any time soon.
I'd say your best bet is to apply to DoDEA stateside (DDESS) while you wait for a position in England to open up. Definitley do not interview unless it's a location where you'd like to be. If you decline a job offer, you may not be considered for other positions this school year (unless you have hard to fill certifications which it does not sound like you do).
I stuck it out this summer. I passed up quite a few opportunities to interview for positions that were in what many consider to be top locations. I've been with DoDEA stateside, EU, and Pacific. I knew exactly where I wanted to go and what position I wanted. I stayed focused and positive and it all worked out.
HelpOthersTurn down interviews for locations you don't want to go. Do not turn down offers. Turning down one offer will freeze your application for the remainder of the year and will be noted on your application for future interviewers to see.
CmcI was not notified that I was not selected. I live in a small overseas community. I was a local applicant and found out through a colleague that someone else was selected.
In reading various posts, I've noticed some of you have had experience working with international schools and am wondering as to the pros/cons of those schools vs DoDEA. I understand experiences and benefits can vary wildly based on what school you are teaching at and location, but am thinking more of the top tier schools. Is teaching at an international school respected in the public teaching realms? Would that experience be well regarded on a resume for DoDEA? In general, could you support a family on what international schools provide? (For context, I am looking to teach in Japan as my wife is from there and we have extended family there) Any information would be greatly appreciated, and I apologize if this question is a bit off topic for this board.
I, personally, wouldn't mind being more immersed in the culture of whatever nation I'm in. Through service in the military and my own personal journeys, I've lived in 8 countries outside the USA. This time, however, would be the first time I'd be dragging a wife and kiddos with me around the globe, and having dependents has made me quite a bit more cautious (wimpy?). My ultimate goal, of course, is to work for DoDEA, but as I mentioned before, with my current credentials I am sure I am at the very bottom of the pile. You have all given me a lot to look into and I am very appreciative of your inputs.
HelpOthersIf you are hired from an international school in Japan to a DoDEA school in Japan without living in the USA during the application and offer time frame, you would likely not qualify for Living Quarters Allowance. That is also something to keep in mind if DoDEA is your ultimate goal.
In your opinion do my certifications seem like enough to get an offer or are general courses usually better certs for getting hired? I have business, computer science, graphic arts, computer technology, and technology education. I am waiting to hear back if I'm qualified for educational technologist.
