And then continue an in "depth check" that could take months...weird. What if something doesn't check out in July and I have already quit my current teaching job! That's no good!
Shouldn't they do a through check first and then start paper work on my orders...
Any thoughts on this?

Yes, it's not perfect but the logistics of a full background check make it difficult to come up with better solutions. It all requires a leap of faith in the end.
Keep in mind that with DoDDS, even with a firm offer, orders, contract etc they can still release you without cause until you have passed your two years of provisional service.

Feeling the same about wanting to get it official. Like TeacherMama, I am no criminal and have excellent credit. I can't see an issue, but I wish I had a firm offer for peace of mind. I guess it's better than waiting till June to get a job, though! Knowing now makes me thankful, even if I am not feeling patient.
