I interviewed for a position in Germany and am in the waiting phase now....I was wondering how housing will work if I am offered the job. I noticed that the security deposit for many homes is quite expensive. Do we have to pay those costs upfront or is there some kind of living quarters allowance that assists with those costs?

librarylady Would the advance come from my pay or from LQA ? Does that make sense? The position is in WIesbaden.

Scholar It comes from pay. Then they take the money out "slowly" from your base pay (they will not garnish your allowances like LQA). But remember when you are in a hotel looking for a house and waiting for the paperwork, they pay for the hotel and per diem (food costs based on their limit and your receipts).

librarylady Do you know on average how much it costs to pay all of the security deposits? I know it varies from country to country but figured I would at least ask. Is it common for people to use the advance option? We are just trying to think ahead. And all of this is really hypothetical since I have no offer in hand yet...

Scholar It's pretty common to get the advance since moving is expensive (think shower curtains, trash cans, etc. ) Those things add up quickly and the advance pay is interest free. My experience with rent is in Italy. We paid 2 months rent cash before stepping foot in the house.

haha Most of the moving in expenses (1st, last, fees, etc) will be covered by LQA in most locations. You likely would have to front the money and then be reimbursed in a few weeks when LQA kicks in.

The only thing LQA generally doesn't cover/reimburse is the deposit since that would be paid back to you directly by the landlord after you settle ...See More
