I am currently in college for a bachelors degree in Special Education. Can anyone shed some light on the hiring process DODs? My dad was a service member and I really want to be a part of this! Thank you!!

Basically, you fill out your EAS application and wait. The majority of hiring starts in May/June for the following fall and is done by August/September (but could happen at virtually any time of the year).

Eventually (could be weeks/months but is years for many/most people) you may get on a referral list and be notified of this by email. This would mean that a principal has pulled/received a list of qualified candidates and you are on that list. They would then interview a number of people on that list (3 to 5 in many cases). If you are selected to be interviewed you would generally get an email (possibly a phone call) from the principal to set up a phone interview. If you are selected you would generally get an email from HR within days or weeks with a tentative offer for the position.

After the tentative offer, you accept or reject. If you accept then you get some paperwork to complete. If you reject then you are generally locked out of the hiring season for the rest of that year (to keep people from cherry picking the best locations and wasting people's time). You then start the process for applying for official passports.

After that there is more paperwork to complete including fingerprint cards, physical forms etc. If that checks out then at some point you get a link to complete an EQIP form for an official gov't background check.

At some point apparently this turns into a "Firm" offer if everything is looking good (sorry about being vague on this point as this is a new step in the process). If everything continues to check out, you would eventually get your orders for your new job. After this you can set up a pack out for your household goods, vehicle etc and set up your travel arrangements.

This whole process can take months. Many people are hired in early summer and get the whole process done in time to report before the start of school. For many other people this drags out and they end of reporting after schools starts. Most people advise that you not resign from a current position until you have a firm offer and/or your orders.

SPED is a good area to have (has helped me find jobs in 5 countries!). To optimize your chances with DoDEA make sure your degree allows you to be qualified in Mild to Moderate and Moderate to Severe under DoDEA requirements (take a look at the requirements here: https://www.dodea.edu/Offices/HR/employment/categories/support.cfm . Normally you would get Mild to Mod. automatically with your SPED degree and would need to make sure that 12 of those credit hours had something to do with Severe Disabilities, Physical Disabilities, Augmentative Communication, Cognitive Deficits etc.

If your state allows you to get a certification specifically in Moderate to Severe (many do not) you would only need 6 hours dealing the areas listed above.

Good luck! It's not nirvana, perfect, for everyone, but DoDEA is a great gig/lifestyle for many/most teachers and their families.

HelpOthers If you want to student teach with DoDEA, you need to start the process MUCH earlier than most schools, so start thinking about it about a year or more before you actually expect to do your student teaching.
