I have heard of people (but don't know them personally) who had the furniture separated out of the lease and paid for it themselves. I would agree that there are plenty of better options to furnish an apt. relatively cheaply.

Lots of opportunities to purchase furniture... local stores, thrift stores, Facebook yard sale groups, base furniture stores, etc.

When you know where you are going, join all the Facebook groups for that location. There are often freebie pages, trade/swap, and sell pages. There are also likely thrift stores of "stores" where items are free.
