I'm a NBTS renewal candidate and am trying to figure out best way to record my videos. Any tips?
iPad or smartphone be used? I don't have access to a camcorder and don't want to rent one or buy one.

You can use an iPhone , an iPad etc. They both work well, What does seem to vary depending on the set up of the room/groups etc. is the sound. Make some practice videos just to test the sound. Hope this helps!
