Do infants have the capacity to be independent beings?

Hi there,

I am completing my teaching degree at university and have an assignment of enquiry to do. My topic is based on the idea that infants should be treated as individuals. Do you believe children under two years old have the ability to effectively communicate with others and express themselves?

I am wandering about some of the perspectives and opinions you may have on this topic?

Any thoughts you may have will be useful, thank you. Renee.

ILUVBABIES Do children under two years old have the ability to effectively communicate with others and express themselves? Have you ever tried to feed a one year old something she didn't want to eat? I'm pretty sure she effectively communicated her disgust to you!

Of course, they can. The eating example was one. Babies can communicate they are hungry, want a diaper change, have a tummy ache, are tired, etc. They even have people who study the different cries of a new infant and are able to identify from the cry what that infant needs. Experienced mothers and grandmothers usually already recognize these. I was observing my dgd who is turning 1 this week earlier this month when she was in an infant play area at a children's museum. There were about 3-4 different babies in there from the ages of 7 to 11 months of age. My dgd would crawl up to the others, reach out to them and smile wanting to interact. She has two older siblings and is around other older children who interact with her frequently each day. When she doesn't want to eat a food offered she either takes her face away or if the food is on the table she swipes it off in one arm movement. When she wake up from the night or from a nap,she stands in the corner of her bed nearest the door and calls out to be taken out. if we put her to bed when she is still hungry or thirsty, she will cry until we return and figure out what she wants. She is a very happy child and laughs at funny occurances, She smiles at her favorite familiar people and tears up at the faces of some new people. She understands the up and down motion now and when she wants to be picked up or held, she moves over to us and puts her arms up to be held. There is no question at all that that is what she wants. There are so many instances that these children express themselves and show emotions that I can not imagine that in this day and age that anyone actually believes that small children can not communicate or express themselves. They are individuals from the beginning and reach out for human interaction with caring adults. If a young child does not show this, then I would have serious concerns about that child's development or even environments he spends the majorityof his time.
