BSc Computer Science Personal Statement

Hi there! I was wondering if I could get a teachers feedback on my personal statement. I am applying for BSc Computer Science. My personal statement is as follows:

Computers – Today are involved in almost every aspect of our lives. As a matter of fact, they draw up the guidelines for our future. It seems as if the list of possibilities that they will offer us tomorrow is almost unbound. I have always been fascinated in the genesis of computers from a young age. Discovering new facts by trial and error enlightened me about this technology. I was delighted to be able to take up what had formerly been a hobby, as an academic subject at GCSE. Computers – Today are involved in almost every aspect of our lives. As a matter of fact, they draw up the guidelines for our future. It seems as if the list of possibilities that they will offer us tomorrow is almost unbound. I have always been fascinated in the genesis of computers from a young age. Discovering new facts by trial and error enlightened me about this technology. I was delighted to be able to take up what had formerly been a hobby, as an academic subject at GCSE. Studying Information Communication Technology gave me an insight to proficiently analyse and evaluate programs after designing and implementing them. From this I realised the importance of end-user feedback. In Design & Technology – Systems & Control, I learnt the need for structured programming via circuits. In addition, I was appointed the head of ICT of our Young Enterprise team. My post included designs for products, advertisements, business cards and a spreadsheet for mathematical calculations. At A-Level I studied a broad spectrum of subjects. I take pleasure in studying Biology because I enjoy reading about exciting discoveries regarding new technologies that are being designed and introduced to aid and advance the human- body. Genetics is a field that is advancing rapidly. The incorporation of biotechnology and computers is known as Bioinformatics. It involves the use of the Internet, Artificial Intelligence and other advanced computational methods to assist in storing and analyzing data generated from DNA sequencing. Chemistry provides me with an overall understanding and matures me by developing my analytical and evaluative skills. To enhance my knowledge of computers I decided to take up ICT, not just because of its obvious relevance to Computer Science, due to the fact that I have always been intrigued with the intellectual challenge it brings. As part of my A- Level Information Communication Technology, I produced a database solution to a real-life problem, demonstrating competence in the skills of design, testing, implementation and documentation. I feel that this varied academic background will help me immensely in my studies and in my ambition to become a well- rounded individual. I prioritise well and aside from studying, I like to make time to socialise. I enjoy reading upon new ideas and releases. I discover the latest at Gizmodo and Engadget. As well as exercising at the gym, I enjoy swimming and playing badminton. Gathering a group of friends together to have a game of badminton assists me to develop my organisational and planning skills. This coincides with teaching at KUMON. As a tutor, I had to organise and plan my classes and curriculum to a high standard.

I like public-speaking and presented my project ‘DNA Vector Wars’ in front of an audience at Imperial College London, enhancing my communication and presentation skills. Alongside all of this, I have been working as a relief carer in a residential home, portraying my awareness for the practicalities of people in life and with previous work experience in a local hospital; I have noticed the significance of computer systems in the medical field. I followed this up with the HSE approved ‘First Aid @ Work’ course which is a vital necessity at times of emergencies, where immediate mechanical aid may not available. Computer Science is a highly challenging field which requires a combination of logic and creativity and I strongly believe my qualifications and qualities are a result of my determination and commitment to meet goals as well as my hard-working nature. Computer Science particularly appeals to me as it leads to a variety of specializations. The job prospects, market availability and future career offer a bonus. With a great deal of passion for technology, I believe such a degree will challenge me well.
