Use of quotation marks

In my recent book I used quotation marks in this manner: She said to herself, "I love him but I'm not sure I can trust him." The publishers' editors removed the quotation marks and I believe that was incorrect. The woman is quoting herself. Can you clarify?

Carol McNally You can use italics to signal talk to self, but that seems ok to me.

As for the Billings' vs. Billings's....when you say the "ez" sound at the end, it's a good idea to do the s's so your reader knows how to pronounce the word. Either is technically correct. If you said, "This is the cows' favorite meadow" (meaning the favorite meadow of al...See More

Also in my recent book I used terms such as "In the Billings' home" and the publishers' editors changed that to read "In the Billings's home" and I always thought this to be incorrect and awkward. That's like saying "In Jesus's name" saying the "s" sound twice -- awkward.
