I teach middle school and I have found that the more "off the wall" the assignments are, the more my students love it. Our end of the year project was the ABC Fairy Tale. As a class, we read the story "Little Red Riding Hood" and rewrote it in 26 sentences - each sentence beginning with a letter of the alphabet in sequential order. Their assignment was to take a fairy tale, folk tale, etc. and rewrite it to present to the class. Even my most reluctant writers enjoyed this. This assignment emphasized varied sentence beginnings and lengths. They were fantastic.

I wish I could take credit for this idea, however, I know I read about this somewhere. But it goes to show that you don't have to necessarily be a creative person to have your students write creatively.
