What do I do about those kids whose hands are raised before I even open my mouth to give directions? One book I read (Reading for Meaning? Daily 5? can't remember which one) says to tell them that you will take questions later, because if their hands are up then they aren't listening to the directions. Well, this doesn't work. I've used it for three years with three different classes/mixtures of abilities, and it doesn't work at all! I open my mouth to give a direction and six hands are up in the air. And then there are those interminable "what if?" questions that by the time you answer them, everyone has forgotten the original directions! Anyone have tried and true ways to stop this?
j.e. One technique that worked for me was to just stop talking until the kids were all sitting with their hands folded, eyes on me, and lips zipped. Peer pressure seemed to work. Nobody liked sitting and waiting for the others to be quiet. This was in my resource class, in elementary school.

Joyce Nation I have ran into this problem myself and I found that asking what they need sometimes keeps them from raising their hand to early. However I have not come up with a sure way to stop it and look forward to reading what others have to say On 6/04/11, Leanne/2nd/CA wrote: > What do I do about those kids whose hands are raised before > I even open...See More
