Yeah, in a perfect world, you'd call the kid aside privately -- but you just can't always do the ideal thing. Shutting the conversation down was the best option at the time ... but if you're in a similar situation in the future, I'd say follow up the next day. Talk to the kid as he's entering the classroom and say, "Hey, yesterday wasn't a perfect situation. You weren't working, but it would've been better if I'd called you aside. How about this? You don't give me a reason to call you out, and I'll have no reason to reprimand you -- either in public or private."
I am subbing high school pe, I need reading passages with questions about different sports; basketball, soccer, badminton, volleyball, football, etc. where can I find these on high school level. Thank you!
The application is called Class Updates and work...See More I'm a college professor and President of an educational technology startup that helps to improve student learning and retention in the classroom. If you're passionate about education like I am then hopefully you will be glad to give me feedback and help with case studies in your classroom.
The application is called Class Updates and works like this:
We help connect students and teachers with instant push notifications so students never have to worry about forgetting a presentation being due or class being canceled. All the teacher has to do is sign up on the application and create a class for their relevant school and tell their students to sign up. Once signed up they will receive instant notifications right to their phone as soon as it is sent.
We've also built a calendar function so students can track all of their classes and future notifications in one place.

If you would like to download the application the links are below and I appreciate the discussion on the application and how we can help improve the learning environment for the students while saving faculty time.
The course will be for 9 -12 grade students, I hate to reinvent the wheel and would like to know if such a course already exists, and if so how do I get my hands on it. I am willing to tweak out of state materials to work here in Idaho, but I need a little direction. Please help...

A visitor was coming for a week or more, so do this, do that, add on this and that. Also, there were long faculty meetings because of threats of a schedule change. But I got settled down again. Again the principal said I was doing well - not just well but even said that was a great class. Then in a month there was another overhaul!!! This continued at least one more time and I gave up. I gave up because we were suddenly changing the schedule from a 4x4 block to 9 periods. This started in mid-October. The teachers were suffering - and I actually think it is possible they were suffering as they tried to keep up to the standard that I survived. Sometimes I wondered - maybe it is partly my fault - maybe the principal thinks if I can survive, then everyone should be able to. I quit my job. Now my greatest struggle might be survival of my family. And this is not the first time I have quit. I'll say a bit more even though it probably belongs in another post. But this is not the first time I quit! I had a principal at another school that came to school drunk at least once (rumors were that she was an alcoholic and got drunk every evening) and she always kept teachers on edge. I was not a member of the union, but I had a heart to heart with the union leader and I suggested it might help if I quit my job. The union leader (the top guy - what do you call him - president?) agreed that I was probably the one that should go just because I was able to survive - wasn't married at the time, no family, excellent physical condition, etc. I quit, but I was lucky - found another job in another state. Right after I quit my car got totaled when someone through rocks at me from a cliff, I stopped the car and another car rammed me. The tribal police were not able to find out who hit me. The car frame was bent and I could not get insurance to pay. But I want to add, I really don't have a lot of respect for unions either - probably especially because of that experience. To be honest, and this is the first time I have ever said this, but I could feel they didn't really want me around.
