Almost all of the kidergartners know lower case letters and
uppercase letters and sounds by the end of January. We start
reading as soon as the kids know two letters: a and t. We
put the two letters together and form the word "at." We talk
about how when you read you say the letter sounds, and
demonstrate how to sound it out. I then let the kids point to
each letter, say its sound, and then put it together. Wow!
You're reading! That's what reading is: looking at the letters
and saying their sounds. When we know more letters we will
be able to make more words.
