A few things that are throwing me off. I thought I knew how to use Zoom and Google Classroom well enough, but, that is evidently not the case. After the first week, half the students are yet to show, so, I don't want to start activities for grades. The activities that I have done are continually being interupted by students who are coming in late, or coming back in because their connection dropped. I remind to try to get in on time, then restart. I already had a parent get mad and yell "It aint her fault", so I'm not going to get screamed at parents, as most of them are sitting right next to their kid.
This is compounded by things that should have been sent to each student in Google Classroom as their own copy is an editable copy that everybody is working on, while in the other class each student had their own copy. The assignment was created at same time for each class, so I can't for the life of me understand how the settings were different.
I'm thinking of pre-recording the presentation of material portion, then going over questions and answers together. We only have 40 minutes for each class. I am thinking of doing things that I got a few years ago from TPT, History with Mr. E. I need to quickly reset, and I think that for the virtual format, doing something that is worksheet based is going to work the best, even if that is not how I would normally run my class.
So, I am wondering if anyone has suggestions on how they make their class run in a virtual format.
sunflowerWatch a short video on something, talk about the weather in other states, countries.. check google for "what's today google celebration" etc...
I have been having trouble teaching with powerpoints. I am being told it does not have enough rigor. QUESTION: How can I make my powerpoints more rigorous??? Thanks for your time!

I was forever getting surprised by the bell. You know what...See MoreThis is my 40th year of teaching middle school. I began my career at Bucyrus Middle School in Ohio for 11 years, then moved to Bradenton, FL where I've taught at Martha B. King Middle School for the past 29 years. Let me share with you my creation for helping with class management.
I was forever getting surprised by the bell. You know what I mean...you've lost track of time and the bell rings. I've created a program to run on a pc running Windows that keeps track of the time for me. It has a large digital clock and right below it, the number of minutes left in the period. Depending on your teaching method, you can set it up to play a tune (alarm) with 1, 2, or 3 minutes before the bell. I have my clock play the alarm with 1 minute left. My class rule: with 1 minute left, students may pack up and stand next to their seats until I dismiss them. Some of the many teachers on my campus using The Clock give them a bit more time. It's totally up to the teacher.
I've been using The clock since around 1990. Other teachers have given me ideas to add features to the program:
Restroom signout
Countdown timer
Bulletins
& more
I'm giving The Clock away so other teachers can share in it's use. Check it out at my personal website: http://www.timcraig.com/clock
Download and install it. Enjoy it. Let me know what you think.
tjbteachThis is excellent, I am just a substitute, but one of my biggest disadvantages is knowing the time per hour and keeping track of time management to stay on task with required lesson. I don't know if I will be able to down load, but what a great idea!
StephenteacherClassroom management is a requirement, especially in MS. You have to start early in the year..on day one. It is really being organized and running a class smoothly from opening bell to dismissal. It's not classroom discipline, but it's a partner. Here are some great tips here http://teachersindex.com/classroommanagement.html
