I have been teaching high school science for 10 years, and I am thinking of switching to a PE teacher. I think I would like to teach elementary level. I am afraid my abilities to coach a sport such as basketball, volleyball aren't that great, however I am in pretty good shape and can learn. DO I test out or do I need to take a few classes. I am so ready for a change! What is a day like for a PE coach? Any advice? I am sure it isn't easy but it does sound like a lot more fun!

The best way for you to get first hand experience with the job would be to shadow a PE teacher. Go to another school where the students won't know you and follow the teacher around for the day. Take notes and at the end of the day ask lots of questions. If it is still some thing you want to do then talk with your local ESD they will be able to point you in the direction you need to go. Good Luck.

That sounds like good advice, thank you for your response.
I recently fell in love with the game of Soccer. I am trying to teach my daughter the game and I wonder if anyone has tips or drills I could use to teach her the basics. I also would not mind coaching the sport in the future and if anyone has advice on coaching strategies or anything about the game.
You can center your end of the year activities on the Olympics which will be held this summer. I have a page of links on my website on the Olympic Games.

I would go with a tug of war station, 30 yeard dash, parachute, scooters, water relay race, and a sack race.

Got a new teaching position and have been running around like crazy!! As far as the jogathon, we basically set it up in a week for a one day event. We along with our parents came up with some great prizes for the top fundraisers. We had one of our PE teachers shave his hair into a mohawk and color it pink. Top students got a shave! They were so into it. Once we camped out on the roof of our gym if the school hit a certain number. The parents took care of the rest. They supplied us with bottled water, snacks and popcycles. The got us a DJ for the day so the students had music while jogging. Basically when a student came to class they attempted as many laps as they could. They had been given envelopes for their pledge money and donors. It was so simply put together but our parents were a huge help. As far as Wong's management, I have not read all of it but it seems he is really about procedures and I agree with that completely. Procedures help the students know what to expect and set the tone for hopefully good behavior. Sorry I don't know more about what he says. If you have any further q's re the jogathon just let me know. Hope this helps!! And the fact that it only took a week or less of planning is something that people need to understand. I do a club "Chipmunk Chase" for the families of my after-school club. This takes just about NO planning. And it's still so much fun for everyone.
Are you in a warm climate? Camping out on the gym roof makes me think so. Maybe you can tell my visitors about your jog-a-thon sometime. You can email me if you want. Also, how many kids were involved in yours?
Our school system does huge races for fundraising, but this is a major undertaking. I think that more people should know about the in-school jog-a-thons. Caro
I will be an assistant coach next year for football. I am trying to find some advice or material to read that will help me to freshen up my football knowledge and help me coach. Does anyone have any suggestions or know of any good material I shoould look into getting?
I am a second year assistant who coaches linebackers. I played in 9th and 10th before an injury shot my hip. That was 24 years ago!

Walden University has online but also has video courses where they send you the course videos and packet you do it and then send it in. You have a lot of time. When I took it it was under Canter University by they are part of walden. Not sure which one.
