currently teach spec ed 4th/5th grade, considering teaching preschool to k at private such as Bright Horizon or public school. What are the pros and cons?

claire I teach Pre-Kindergarten in a public school. We meet 5 days a week and have an A.M. and P.M. class. Chidlren this age are so enthusiatic and want to please their teacher and they are just plain fun to be with. The longer I teach this level the more cons I find. The powers that be must go to bed at night wondering what else they can do to suck the fun out of preschool/PK just like they have managed to do K-12. I teach preschool special education. My class size is limited to 12, and I have them for two full days a week (M/W and T/Th.) F is my planning day. With assessment mandates (we have to follow K-12 guidelines even though the kids only come two days per week), I feel like I honestly do assess more than I teach. We send home progress reports every five weeks. For others, that is 25 class days. For me, that's ten. Even with more planning minutes than my K-6 colleagues, I still find that I'm one of the last to leave most nights. It takes a lot of time setting up new activities, cleaning, etc. Claire, I am right there with you: last weekend I washed all of the play clothes. This weekend I'm washing the M/W blankets, and next weekend it'll be the T/Th blankets! I love,love, love every minute I spend with the kids, but there are so many minutes without the kids that I don't. lol

To the OP, do it because you love the kids and the idea of teaching that age group. If you think it'll be an easier assignment, you may be disappointed. I may not be grading papers, but I'm still shuffling LOTS of them. :)

Thank you to all of you preschool > teachers for putting your heart and soul into what you do. > I agree Carolyn, I am also an Early Childhood Education Major working on completing my second set of methods. I have noticed that Early Childhood majors seem to work harder than any other education majors, however I personally feel that their jobs are by far the most rewarding. I have been out in the field teaching this semester and I have absolutely loved every minute of it. One of my favorite things about working in Early Childhood is getting the children to respond to questions because you never know what they are going to tell you. Children at this age are so imaginative and they really enjoy learning new things. I find that just a simple change in a vocabulary word gets them interested in wanting learning more. Also I have learned that it is extremely important to "hook" a child to the lesson to get them interested. A simple bright colored gift bag full of fake fishing worms will do the trick. They absolutely love anything they can touch or hold. I know there is so much more to be learned with each new experience but I treasure the time spent in the field because that is where so much is to be learned not only working with the children but with the teachers and principle at the school. Each experience is unique and I learn something to take with me from every experience. I try to add new information to my files so I can be very prepared when I have my own classroom. I feel that Early Childhood Education Majors have the most rewarding job possible because we get to see a new generation learn, grow, and play together.
