I have a new student in my room who is EXTREMELY slow! She came to my school in January, and was in another room, but the teacher and parent had major issues, so she was moved to my room about 4 weeks ago. She can't finish any of her work in the allotted time, when others are finished and reading AR. I have spoke with her step-mom and she said that the child is like this at home as well....takes forever to do anything unless you stand over her the whole time. She is also behind because the first semester, when she was with her mother, she missed a combined total of 9 weeks of school. I don't know how to help her get any faster except to stand over her the entire time, but I can't do that because I have other students! I work with her in the afternoons to try to catch her up......I have her in my lowest reading group, but they are all at 85+ WCPM and she is doing good to get 60WCPM. (I know the others get really bored in reading groups listening to her read, but they are all very respec...See More

I would give her a book that she can read fluently--regardless of words per minutes-and have her practice reading it. Send it home with her, have them practice reading it at home-it sounds to me like she may just need to build up her confidence some-and I hate to say thi...See More

To -Mel - DRA DRA is a series of leveled books designed to allow teachers to determine students' reading accuracy, fluency, and comprehension levels. My school uses the Rigby Readers for this purpose.

I was feeling pretty good about my fluency rates until I read that your lowest are 85 wpm, then that good feeling took a flying leap downward! I'm glad t...See More
