I have a student that can sound out every letter in a word, but cannot blend it together. I am thinking it is a memory thing...he cannot hold more than one sound in his head at a time. Any suggestions? How about activities? He is in K.

Laurie I had a reading recovery student in first grade with the very same frustrating problem. We worked on 3 letter words every day using magnetic letters and actually pushing the sounds as we pushed each magnetic letter. We got faster and faster at this. Sharon I have a first grade student who had the same problem. It took 8 months but it is better now! I taught her a way to blend the word AS she is sounding it out. I say, "Use your rollercoaster!" and I have a printed out picture of a rollercoaster that she has in front of her as a reminder.
